Chapter 83 - The Fracture of Allegiance

Jared picked up the envelope, sliding his thumb beneath the heavy wax seal.
Inside was not a deed, nor a check, nor a collection of stock certificates. It was a single sheet of heavy parchment, signed by five former directors of the United States Atomic Energy Commission and countersigned by the Federal District Court of Northern Michigan.
*TITLE DEED AND SOVEREIGN CONSERVATORSHIP: SECTOR NINE.*
*TO BE HELD IN PERPETUAL TRUST BY THE CHIEF MECHANIC OF VANCE REPAIR & INDUSTRIAL.*
Beneath the legal declarations lay a handwritten note from the man who had taught him how to set the gap on a spark plug and how to stand tall when the world tried to tell you that you weren't good enough:
*"Jared,*
*If you're reading this in the chair beneath the hearth, it means the family finally tore itself apart over what they thought was hidden in the walls. Don't weep for them. Melissa has your mother's eyes, but she has her own heart, and that heart was rotted out by vanity long before you stopped paying her rent.*
*The vault doesn't belong to the government anymore. They abandoned it when the budget ran dry in '78. It belongs to the soil. It powers the shop, it powers the valley, and as long as the Vance name holds the key, nobody can ever evict Noah and Ellie from their birthright.*
*Seal the top hatch, Jared. Leave the house in the pit. The world doesn't need to know what keeps the lights burning, so long as the cold stays out.*
*— Grandfather."*
A sudden alarm tone chimed from the primary terminal.
Jared turned back to the screen. The elevator platform at the far end of the hall was descending again.
He raised his rifle, moving to the edge of the dais with every sense sharpened to a razor's edge. But the lift cage did not contain federal agents or more of Graves’ mercenaries.
Inside the cage, handcuffed to the center rail and guarded by two federal tactical officers in full olive-drab assault kit, stood Melissa.
The lift hit the floor with a cushioned clank. A tall, gray-haired man in a dark overcoat stepped off the platform, holding a badge wallet marked with the seal of the Department of Defense Inspector General.
"Jared Vance?" the man called out, his hands held clearly away from his sidearm.
"State your name and authorization code," Jared commanded, not lowering his weapon an inch.

"Special Agent Donald Cross. Authorization: Cold Hearth Zero-Niner-Echo," the agent replied, his voice calm, steady, and carrying the authority of an institution that worked in the deepest shadows of the state. "Your grandfather told me forty years ago that if this terminal ever went hot, I should look for a young man with diesel grease under his fingernails and a refusal to back down."
Cross stepped into the light, glancing at Graves tied to the crane stanchion, then down at the buckled floor plates. "Looks like you finished the maintenance cycle ahead of schedule."
