Chapter 63 - The Decryption Key

Jared crushed the yellow detonator beneath the steel toe of his work boot, grinding the circuit board into useless plastic and copper shards.

Graves lay in the snow, clutching his shattered knee, his face twisted in agony and disbelief. Melissa stood over him, panting heavily, clutching the tire iron with both hands, her eyes wide, wild, and vacant. Her expensive clothes were shredded, her fingers blue from the frostbite setting in, her entire illusion of luxury stripped away to expose the raw, broken core underneath.

"You used me," Melissa whispered, her voice cracking into a ragged sob. "You made me hate my own brother. You made me humiliate his babies. You told me they were the ones who stole my life."

Graves spat a mouthful of blood into the snow, glaring at her with pure venom. "You humiliated them because you’re a miserable, jealous parasite, Melissa. I didn't make you do anything. I just showed you a mirror, and you jumped at the chance to poison them."

Jared stepped forward, kicking Graves’s sidearm twenty feet into the darkness of the woods. He didn't look at Melissa. He didn't offer her a coat. He looked down at Graves with a cold, absolute detachment that terrified the fallen mercenary far more than any display of rage could have.

Harlan arrived at Jared’s shoulder, the captured carbine leveled squarely at Graves’s forehead.

"The satellite uplink terminal in his Suburban," Harlan said. "Grab it."

Jared walked to the idling SUV, tore the encrypted military communications deck from its dashboard mount, and brought it back. Harlan reached into his olive coat, pulled a tarnished silver dog tag from around his neck, and inserted the micro-key embedded in the metal edge into the terminal's diagnostic port.

The screen lit up with bright green text:

Jared stared at the glowing monitor. Arthur hadn't buried twelve million dollars in stolen gold to fund a luxurious retirement. He hadn't hoarded it out of greed. The entire operation—the extraction from the decommissioned base, the thirty years of paranoia, the Crown Charter shielding the property—had been a singular, ruthless military operation designed to bypass Canada's sovereign probate laws and deposit the entirety of the Vance lineage's assets into an unbreakable trust for Noah and Ellie.

Arthur had seen the rot in his extended family decades ago. He had seen the greed in Melissa, the corruption in his half-brother's lineage, and he had built a fortress of iron, law, and Cold War steel around Jared’s future children before they were even born.
