Chapter 40 - Melissa's Desperation

Twenty miles away, in a cramped, mold-scented single-wide trailer at the edge of the county dump, Melissa Vance sat at a laminate kitchen table littered with empty beer cans and overdue utility notices.

The glow of a cheap burner phone cast a sickly blue hue across her gaunt, hollowed-out face. Her hands shook violently as she clicked through her bank app for the tenth time that hour.

*Account Balance: $14.12.*

The luxury suburban home Jared had stripped from her was gone. Her BMW had been repossessed three weeks ago after Darren’s arrest revealed she had stopped making payments six months prior, relying entirely on Jared’s monthly "allowance" that had vanished into thin air. Her so-called friends from the country club had blocked her number the second the local paper published Darren’s mugshot with the headline: *LOCAL BUSINESS BURGLARY EXPOSES MULTI-YEAR EMBEZZLEMENT SCHEME.*

She was ruined. Completely, utterly destitute.

The burner phone on the table suddenly vibrated, buzzing against the sticky surface like an angry hornet.

Melissa snatched it up, pressing it to her ear before the first ring finished.

"Marcus?!" she shrieked, her voice frantic, laced with hysteria. "Did you get it? Did you get the server keys from Jared’s office? The offshore account numbers? Darren's lawyer called today—they're offering him ten years if he doesn't post bail by Friday! Marcus, speak to me!"

There was a long pause on the other end of the line. The sound of rain beating against metal filled the speaker, accompanied by the slow, rhythmic click of a lighter.

"You're pathetic, Melissa," Marcus's voice came through, cold and venomous.

Melissa froze, the breath catching in her throat. "Marcus... what are you talking about? We had a deal! Fifty-fifty! I set the stage! I broke Jared’s spirit! I showed everyone what a monster he is—"

"You humiliated yourself over a box of Friskies on Christmas Day like an unhinged lunatic," Marcus snarled, his tone slicing through her hysteria like a razor. "You alerted the entire county to the friction between you two. You got Darren locked up in county jail where he's singing like a canary to federal investigators. You didn't break Jared. You turned him into a cornered wolf."

"Marcus, please! I have nothing left!" Melissa sobbed, tears cutting through the heavy makeup caked on her cheeks. "The court took my car! Jared evicted me from the estate house! I’m living in filth! You promised me five hundred thousand dollars from Dad’s offshore account!"

"There is no offshore account for you, Melissa," Marcus said, his voice chillingly dismissive. "Dad’s money was gone ten years ago. I spent it keeping the federal marshals off my trail in South America. The only thing left in Jared’s possession is the industrial land title—which is worth two million on the commercial market today."

Melissa gasped, her mind reeling as the horrific realization crashed down upon her. "You... you lied to me. You used Darren to scout the security system... you used me to distract Jared..."

"You were always a parasite, Melissa. You fed off Jared until he cut you off, and then you came begging to a dead brother," Marcus whispered. "I’m at Jared’s house right now. His men are down, but he’s still breathing. When I’m done with him and those two little leeches upstairs, I’m putting your burner phone in his dead hand. Who do you think the sheriff is going to arrest for hiring the hit?"

"No! Marcus, no! You can't—"

The call disconnected.

Melissa dropped the phone. It clattered to the linoleum floor, the screen cracking into a spiderweb. She fell to her knees in the dark, clutching her head, the crushing weight of her own greed and malice finally collapsing in on her. She had thought she was playing a game of vengeance against a brother who refused to finance her vanity; in reality, she had opened the gates of hell for the only man who had ever truly kept her safe from the monsters of their family.
