Chapter 23 - Melissa's New Reality

Across the city, far away from the comfortable suburban streets she once took for granted, Melissa sat at a wobbly laminate table in her cramped, second-story apartment.
The evening shadows stretched across the modest living room. There were no soaring vaulted ceilings, no professionally landscaped lawns, and no older brother standing quietly in the background to pay the electricity bill when the balance ran low. Every monthly statement—rent, electricity, gas, internet, groceries, insurance—arrived addressed to her, and her alone.
Her new job as a low-level administrative assistant required a strict, uncompromising budget. Gone were the spontaneous luxury shopping sprees, the expensive salon visits, and the haughty assumption that someone else would always sweep in to rescue her from financial mismanagement. Furthermore, her circle of friends had steadily shrunk as her bitter complaining and toxic habit of playing the perpetual victim grew tiresome to those around her. Greg was long gone, having vanished from her life entirely following his criminal conviction and probation restrictions.

One evening, while rummaging through a cardboard box in her kitchen that she hadn't yet unpacked, Melissa’s hand brushed against a small, forgotten metal cylinder. She pulled it out into the light. It was an unopened can of gourmet cat food—the exact same brand and flavor she had mockingly placed in front of a six-year-old child on Christmas Eve as a cruel "budget menu" joke.
She stared at the can for a long, silent moment. The memory of that night rushed back—the sudden, dead silence of the dining table, her brother's cold, unwavering composure as he cancelled her autopays, and the crushing realization that her arrogance had permanently burned the only bridge that truly mattered. She had traded genuine family support and unearned luxury for petty malice, and the cost had been everything. With a shaking hand, she tossed the can into the trash bin, turned off the kitchen light, and retreated into the dark silence of her lonely apartment.
