Chapter 78 - The Descent into Sub-Level Zero

The synthetic voice from the radio had warned of a containment collapse, but staring into the titanium bore where his mother's stove had once sat, Jared realized something far more dangerous was happening: an automated reclamation cycle.

Embedded along the lip of the aperture were heavy pneumatic locking lugs, each one stamped with his grandfather’s master machinist mark—the crossed calipers inside an anvil. Beside the opening, mounted into what had once been the pantry wall, hung an industrial control console housed inside a fireproof junction box. A keyhole sat at its center, glowing with a soft, pulsing amber diode.

Around Jared’s neck hung the brass key his grandfather had pressed into his palm twenty-four hours before he passed away in the county hospice—a key he had claimed was merely for the old lockbox in the attic.

"You're not going down there!" Melissa shrieked from the shattered doorway, clinging to the splintered frame for support. "Are you insane?! The whole valley is shaking! The police will be here—the National Guard—!"

"The National Guard doesn't have clearance for this sector, Melissa, and neither do you," Jared said, his voice cold and devoid of pity. "Grandfather didn't leave this land to me because of the timber. He left it to me because he knew you and Victor Graves would sell the world to the highest bidder the second you needed cash for a lease payment."

"I have a right to what's down there!" she spat, fear instantly warring with the venomous greed that had poisoned their family for decades. "Half of this estate belongs to me! Dad promised—"

"Dad didn't build this," Jared cut her off, stepping to the control console. "Grandfather did. And Dad spent thirty years trying to pretend it didn't exist because he didn't have the spine to carry the weight."

Jared inserted the brass key into the ignition cylinder and turned it clockwise ninety degrees.

The amber light snapped to brilliant green. With a hiss of venting compressed nitrogen, the central aperture groaned, and a hexagonal platform surfaced from the depths, locking flush with the kitchen floor. It was an armored lift cage, built from crisscrossed structural girders and equipped with an old-school mechanical governor.

On the control pillar inside the lift, a brass plate read: *PROJECT COLD HEARTH — STRATIFIED VAULT ACCESS ONLY. AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL: CHIEF MECHANIC J. VANCE.*

His grandfather had never just been a shop owner who fixed tractors for local farmers. He had been the keeper of a buried bunker.

Jared stepped onto the steel deck. The weight of his boots triggered the contact switches.

"Jared, don't leave me out here!" Melissa pleaded, taking a tentative step toward the edge of the pit, her face pale as bone. "Graves’ men are still on the mountain! If they come back—"

"Stay on the surface and call whatever emergency service will answer your voice," Jared said, looking straight into the eyes of the sister who had treated his motherless children like stray dogs. "If you set foot on this elevator, the safety protocols will register an unauthorized passenger and drop the counterweights. You made your choice when you broke into my shop with a crowbar. Now reap it."

May you like

He hit the floor-level toggle. The titanium blast doors overhead snapped shut with a deafening hydraulic clamp, cutting off the snowy night, Melissa’s screaming voice, and the violet sky.

The elevator plunged into the darkness.
