Chapter 75 - The Threshold of the Abyss

Jared stepped onto the platform of the containment bell. He took the brass key from his neck, inserted it into the lock of the titanium courier case, and turned it.

A crisp, heavy *clack* echoed through the chamber.

The hydraulic seals on the case disengaged, venting a brief hiss of inert nitrogen gas. The lid swung open on balanced hinges.

Inside, nestled in custom-molded high-density foam, was not just the master parchment registry bearing the signatures of President John F. Kennedy and the Secretary of the Treasury. Next to the ledger sat a heavy, military-grade satellite uplink terminal—its solid-state screen glowing with an emergency authentication prompt, counting down from sixty seconds.

Beneath the terminal lay an audio cassette labeled in his grandfather’s unmistakable, blocky handwriting:

*FOR JARED. WHEN THE SNOW TURNS VIOLET.*

Jared pressed play on the portable tape deck built into the console.

His grandfather’s voice, raspy from decades of unfiltered cigarettes and diesel fumes, crackled through the small speaker:

*"Jared. If you're listening to this, Victor Graves' people or someone worse pushed the door open. You've protected Noah and Ellie. I know you did, because you're my boy, and you know what family actually means. But the shop wasn't built on top of the vault, Jared."*

The voice paused, accompanied by the clink of a lighter on the recording.

*"The shop was built to keep the vault door pinned down. The real facility isn't beneath Bay 1. The bore shaft you're looking at is just the exhaust chimney. The real entrance is under the house. Under the kitchen where your sister threw that food on the floor."*

Jared froze.

The house. The old family home where he had grown up, where Melissa had tried to sell the deed out from under him, where he had walked away from the toxic dinner table on Christmas Day.

Suddenly, the satellite terminal on the pedestal beeped with a shrill, piercing tone.

The sixty-second countdown hit zero.

Across the valley, three miles away through the frozen darkness, a colossal pillar of pure, blinding white light erupted straight up through the roof of the old family homestead—shattering the night sky and shaking the bedrock of the entire mountain range like an 8.0 magnitude earthquake.

And through the open tactical radio at Jared's belt, a frantic, synthetic voice broadcasted on all emergency frequencies:

*"SECURITY BREACH: SUB-LEVEL ZERO INITIATED. UNKNOWN ENTITY CLIMBING MAIN STAIRWELL AT PRIMARY HOMESTEAD RESIDENCE. CONTAINMENT COLLAPSE IN THREE... TWO... ONE..."*
