Chapter 12 - The Uninvited Knock on the Door

The peaceful morning calm of December 26th was shattered precisely at 9:00 AM by a series of sharp, aggressive knocks echoing against Jared’s front door. The pounding was relentless, carrying an unmistakable aura of panic, indignation, and fury. Jared didn't rush. He gently instructed Noah and Ellie to finish their cereal in the kitchen, walked calmly down the short hallway, and grasped the polished brass handle.
When he pulled the door open, the frigid winter air rushed into the warm foyer, carrying with it a swirl of fine snowflakes and the agitated presence of three uninvited visitors. Standing on the front porch were his parents, their expressions lined with deep anxiety, and right beside them, trembling with rage, was Melissa. Her face was flushed from the cold and anger, her eyes swollen from crying, and her posture rigid with a sense of immense betrayal.
"Jared! Have you completely lost your mind?" his mother burst out before her feet had even fully crossed the threshold, her voice cracking with emotional distress. "Melissa just called us in absolute hysterics! Her lights are out, her internet is dead, and the power company sent a computerized notice saying her autopay account was deleted. How could you do this to your own sister? How could you pull the plug on her utilities right in the middle of the holiday season?"
Jared did not step aside to invite them in immediately. He stood firm in the doorway, blocking the draft, his expression carved from stone. His gaze flicked briefly past his mother to meet Melissa’s furious glare.
"Mom, Dad, it's freezing out here. Come inside the foyer, but keep your voices down. The children are eating breakfast," Jared said, his tone low, steady, and devoid of any emotional warmth.
Stepping into the warmth of the hallway, Melissa immediately shoved past her mother, her voice rising to a shrill pitch. "You arrogant hypocrite! You cut off my utilities over a stupid joke? You locked me out of basic living necessities because your ego got bruised at the dinner table? Greg is sitting in a cold holding cell right now, facing felony charges, all because you panicked like a maniac and called 911 over nothing! Do you have any idea what you've done to my life?"
Jared closed the front door firmly behind them, shutting out the biting wind. He turned around, crossing his arms over his chest, looking down at his sister with a chilling composure that only seemed to infuriate her more.
"A joke, Melissa?" Jared asked quietly, the quiet intensity of his voice cutting through her rant like a scalpel. "You served cat food to a six-year-old child while your daughter ate steak. And as for Greg—he didn't end up in a holding cell because of a misunderstanding. He ended up there because he broke into my commercial property in the middle of the night carrying a crowbar with the express intent of smashing my diagnostic equipment. His confession at the police station is on official record. You sent him. Don't you dare stand in my home and play the victim."

His father stepped forward, holding up a trembling hand in an effort to mediate, though his voice lacked its usual authority. "Jared, listen to reason. Greg made a terrible mistake, yes, but calling the cops and throwing him under the bus—and now cutting off your sister's power—that goes way too far. Family doesn't treat family like criminals."
"Family," Jared repeated, the word tasting bitter on his tongue. "For years, I've acted as the safety net for this family. I bought that house for her, I've paid her bills, I've fixed her car for free, and what did I get in return? Contempt, entitlement, and a bowl of cat food pushed in front of my son's face. The word 'family' lost its meaning the moment you all sat around that dining table and laughed."
