Chapter 6 - The Midnight Intrusion

Jared kept his breathing steady, refusing to let his panic bleed into the car cabin where his children sat safely. He shifted the truck into drive and pulled away from Melissa’s curb, but instead of heading straight toward home, he tapped his phone screen to pull up the live video feed from the shop’s internal security cameras.

The high-definition night-vision lens flickered to life on his screen, casting a ghostly green hue over the interior of his workshop.

The camera in Main Bay Two showed a tall figure bundled in a heavy winter jacket and a dark beanie pulled low over their face. The intruder was moving deliberately between the lifts, carrying something heavy and metallic in their right hand.

Jared squinted at the small screen as he drove smoothly through the quiet, snow-dusted streets.

It was a crowbar.

The figure wasn't heading for the cash register or the small office safe. They weren't looking for quick cash or petty theft. Instead, the intruder walked directly up to the line of high-end, computerized engine diagnostic consoles—expensive, specialized machinery that Jared had spent years saving up to purchase, essential for servicing modern vehicles.

On the live feed, the hooded figure raised the iron crowbar high above their head and slammed it down with brutal force onto the glass screen of the primary diagnostic terminal. The screen shattered into a spiderweb of glowing white cracks.

Rage, cold and razor-sharp, flooded Jared’s veins. This wasn't random vandalism. This was targeted, vindictive destruction designed to cripple his business—retaliation orchestrated by people who believed they could ruin his livelihood without consequence.

Without wasting a single second, Jared picked up his phone, dialed 911, and placed it on the truck’s speaker system.

“911 dispatcher, what is your emergency?” a calm, professional voice answered.

“My name is Jared Miller. I’m reporting an active break-in and malicious destruction of property at my commercial business,” Jared said, his voice clipped and precise. He rattled off the shop’s address, described the live feed he was watching in real-time, and added, “The intruder is currently inside the building smashing diagnostic equipment with a crowbar. I am approximately five minutes away with my two young children in the vehicle. I request police backup immediately.”

“Copy that, Mr. Miller,” the dispatcher responded instantly. “We have units patrolling the commercial district nearby. Two cruisers have been dispatched to your location. Stay in your vehicle upon arrival and do not engage the suspect.”

“Understood,” Jared said, ending the call.

He glanced in the rearview mirror. Noah had fallen asleep against the window, exhausted by the emotional rollercoaster of the evening, while Ellie was quietly stroking her brother’s jacket sleeve, looking up at Jared with wide, trusting eyes.

“Dad, are we going to the shop?” Ellie asked quietly.

“Yes, sweetie. Someone broke in while we were away,” Jared explained gently, keeping his voice calm and reassuring. “The police are already on their way to take care of it. We just need to stop by for a few minutes so I can talk to the officers.”

“Will the bad guy go to jail?” Ellie asked earnestly.

Jared gripped the steering wheel tightly, his jaw set. “Yes, Ellie. Actions have consequences. People who break things that don't belong to them have to pay for what they do.”

As Jared turned his truck down the final snow-covered street leading into the industrial park, the dark silhouette of his auto repair shop came into view.

And right alongside it came the brilliant, flashing crimson and sapphire lights of three police cruisers painting the brick walls in pulsing neon strokes.
