Chapter 18 - Justice in the Courtroom

While Melissa was busy relocating to her cramped new apartment, the legal system was quietly catching up with her former boyfriend. By mid-January, the preliminary criminal court hearing for Greg was scheduled.
The case against Greg was virtually airtight. The prosecution possessed three distinct pieces of damning evidence: first, the live-feed security footage from Jared’s repair shop capturing Greg entering through the side door at 9:42 p.m. carrying an iron crowbar and systematically approaching expensive diagnostic equipment; second, the rapid response 911 call log and the arresting officers' body-cam footage showing Greg pinned to the cruiser hood; and third, Greg's own panicked, unfiltered confession at the scene, where he explicitly yelled out that Melissa had sent him to "even the score" over her car repair.
Melissa had initially promised Greg that she would hire a high-priced defense attorney to get him off scot-free, leveraging her supposed influence over her family. But once her utilities were cut off, her house was repossessed, and her own finances cratered, she lacked the funds to hire anyone better than an overworked public defender.

Faced with overwhelming evidence, Greg’s public defender advised him to take a plea deal. On January 24th, the judge handed down the final verdict: a suspended prison sentence of eighteen months, two hundred hours of mandatory community service, a strict restraining order prohibiting Greg from coming within five hundred yards of Jared, his home, or his repair shop, and a court-ordered restitution fee to cover the potential property damage he had attempted to inflict.
Outside the courtroom, Greg spotted Jared standing by the exit with his attorney. Greg looked pale, defeated, and furious. He muttered an obscenity under his breath, but a stern warning from the accompanying bailiff kept him moving toward the exit. The boyfriend who had tried to play tough guy for a toxic partner was now paying the price for her bitter vendetta.
