Chapter 17 - The Final Days at the Old House

Throughout the first three weeks of January, the suburban house across town transformed from a comfortable home into a stressful staging ground for Melissa’s forced departure. Stripped of her financial safety net and facing the legal reality of the thirty-day eviction notice, Melissa had no choice but to face the music.

Without Jared covering her rent, utilities, and lifestyle expenses, she was forced to confront the harsh economics of the real world. She spent her weekends frantically packing years of accumulated belongings into cardboard boxes, renting a small, sputtering moving truck entirely on her own dime, and securing a modest, cramped two-bedroom apartment in a noisy, working-class neighborhood on the outskirts of the city.

Every time Jared received updates from his real estate attorney regarding the property handover, he felt a lingering sense of closure rather than triumph. There was no joy in seeing his sister’s life downsized; rather, it was a necessary surgical procedure—removing a cancerous tumor of codependency that had threatened to poison his own family's future.

On January 22nd, Melissa made her final trip to the house to drop off the keys with the real estate agent. According to the agent, she had left the place in a state of sullen resentment, muttering bitter threats about Karma and lawsuits before speeding off in her Mercedes—a car Jared had repaired for free just a month prior, only to be berated for not washing the exterior.

By January 25th, Jared’s real estate team completed a thorough walkthrough of the property. The house was structurally sound, impeccably maintained, and completely empty. The locks were changed that very afternoon, and the property was officially prepared for listing on the open market. The chapter of enabling was officially closed.
