Chapter 82 - Iron Retribution

With Graves neutralized and the two surviving contractors disarmed and secured with zip-ties to the heavy structural framing of the crane bay, Jared moved to the main command console.

The violet light pulsing from the cylinder had begun to stabilize, shifting from an angry, blinding discharge back into a steady, rhythmic cycle that hummed at sixty hertz—the exact frequency of the American power grid. On the primary monitoring screen, a sequence of green diagnostic checks began rolling downward in amber monospace font:

*CONTAINMENT FIELD: RESTORED*

*SUB-SURFACE BORE SHAFT: ISOLATED*

*ATMOSPHERIC PURGE: COMPLETED*

*EXTERNAL SIGNALS: JAMMED*

Jared keyed his tactical radio, adjusting the frequency dial until it cleared the local electromagnetic interference. "Marcus. Come in. Report status on Noah and Ellie."

The speaker clicked twice, followed by the crisp, reassuring voice of his head of security. "Jared! Signal just cleared up. Retreat Alpha is quiet. Noah just finished eating breakfast from the rations pack, and Ellie is drawing pictures of your old truck. The kids are completely fine. We monitored a massive power surge from your location, but the structural integrity sensors on the mountain ridge show the bedrock has settled."

A heavy weight that had rested on Jared’s shoulders since Christmas Day finally began to lift, though his pulse remained steady and cold. "The old house is gone, Marcus. The foundation dropped into the vault access. Graves is in custody down here, along with his security detail."

"And Melissa?" Marcus asked after a brief pause.

Jared looked toward the elevator lift at the far end of the cavern. The surface-level cameras mounted on the control console flickered to life, showing the snow-covered clearing above.

Melissa was still there. She was sitting in the slush beside the overturned SUV, her arms wrapped around her knees, shivering uncontrollably as the first red-and-blue emergency lights from the State Police cruisers began painting the pine trees at the edge of the access road.

She had called the authorities herself, desperate for rescue from the monster she had helped create. But the officers stepping out of those cruisers were not the local county deputies she had spent years manipulating with sweet smiles and family connections. They were accompanied by black unmarked utility vehicles bearing federal license plates—the real-time response to the Cold War cryptographic transponder Jared had triggered thirty minutes ago.

"The federal marshals have arrived on the surface," Jared said into the radio. "They're taking Melissa into custody right now. She’s going to spend the next twenty years answering questions about classified corporate espionage, treason, and conspiracy."

"Understood," Marcus replied. "Do we initiate the extraction protocol for you?"

"Not yet," Jared said, his eyes scanning a drawer set beneath the master console. Inside sat a thick, leather-bound operational log stamped with the Department of Energy’s seal from 1968, alongside an envelope addressed to him in his grandfather’s hand. "There’s one more switch I need to throw."
