Chapter 29 - Whispers in the Schoolyard

Despite the legal machinery grinding into motion, the tension crept inexorably closer to Jared's personal sanctuary.
On Wednesday afternoon, Jared left the shop early to pick up Noah and Ellie himself. After the surveillance photos had surfaced, he had stopped allowing them to ride the bus, choosing instead to drive them to and from the elementary school gates in his heavy four-wheel-drive truck.
As he pulled up to the designated parent pick-up lane, he saw Noah standing near the brick entryway, his arms crossed tightly against his chest, looking down at his boots. Ellie was clinging to her older brother’s sleeve, her small face pale and pinched with anxiety.
Jared immediately put the truck into park, stepped out into the biting winter wind, and walked briskly over to them.
"Hey, guys," Jared said, kneeling down between them. "What happened? You look frozen."
Noah looked up, his jaw trembling slightly. "Dad... someone came to the fence during afternoon recess."
Jared felt every nerve ending in his body ignite. "Who came to the fence, Noah?"
"A woman," Ellie whispered, her eyes brimming with sudden tears. "She had a red scarf wrapped around her face, but I knew her voice, Daddy. It was Aunt Melissa."
Jared kept his voice impossibly calm, though a roaring flame swept through his veins. He placed a steady hand on Noah's shoulder and pulled Ellie gently into his arms. "What did she say to you, Ellie?"
"She told me that you were a bad man," Ellie sniveled, burying her cold nose into Jared’s wool jacket. "She said you stole her house and that Santa didn't really love us. She told Noah that we were going to end up on the street just like her, and that if we wanted to see Grandma and Grandpa, we had to tell her where your new safe was in the garage."
Noah’s fists clenched at his sides. "I told her to leave us alone! I yelled for Mr. Henderson, the playground monitor, and when he blew his whistle, she ran through the trees toward the gas station parking lot!"
Jared closed his eyes for a split second, taking one deep, measured breath to master the fury that threatened to rip through him. His sister had crossed from pathetic desperation into unforgivable malice. She had approached his children on school grounds, weaponizing their innocence to fish for ways to rob him again.
He stood up, holding Ellie securely on his hip while keeping Noah firmly against his side. He didn't return to the truck immediately. Instead, he walked straight through the heavy glass double doors of the administrative building and requested to see the principal, Mrs. Holloway.
Fifteen minutes later, Jared was seated in the principal’s office with the district superintendent and the school resource officer, Officer Campbell.
"This is completely unacceptable, Mr. Vance," Principal Holloway stated, her face flushed with genuine indignation after hearing Noah’s statement and reviewing the perimeter gate footage. "We have the woman on camera approaching the chain-link fence at 2:10 PM. Our monitor responded immediately, but she fled off district property."
"She is the subject of an active criminal stalking complaint," Jared said, his voice quiet, controlled, and lethal in its absolute seriousness. "Her name is Melissa Vance. She has an active restraining order petition pending. I want a trespass notice served on her immediately for every single property within this school district."
Officer Campbell leaned forward, jotting down notes. "I'm forwarding this footage directly to Detective Miller. Approaching minors on school grounds while subject to an open investigation constitutes felony harassment and stalking of a minor. We have clear vehicle footage from the gas station across the street showing her getting into a late-model sedan registered to Darren Vance."
"Darren's car?" Jared asked, his eyes narrowing.
"She wasn't driving," Campbell noted. "A male subject was behind the wheel. We're running the plate to verify the driver's identity right now."
Jared stood up, shaking hands with the officials. "My children will not be outside unattended for recess until this woman is in custody. I’ll hire private security if the district cannot accommodate that."
"We will protect your children, Mr. Vance," Holloway promised solemnly. "They will have indoor activities under direct faculty supervision until this matter is resolved by law enforcement."
Walking his children out to the truck, Jared buckled Ellie into her booster seat and adjusted Noah’s seatbelt. He looked at both of them, his heart swelling with fierce, unbreakable devotion.
"Listen to me, both of you," Jared said, his eyes meeting theirs with absolute clarity. "You did everything right today. You didn't listen to her, you stood up for each other, and you alerted an adult immediately. You are safe. Nobody is taking our home. Nobody is hurting this family. Do you understand me?"
Noah nodded firmly, wiping a rogue tear from his cheek. "I understand, Dad."
"I'm not scared, Daddy," Ellie whispered, reaching out to squeeze his thumb. "Because you're stronger than her."
May you like
"Always," Jared said softly, kissing her forehead before closing the door. "Always."
