Chapter 69 - The Sovereign Ledger

Sarah looked up, her tear-streaked face twisting in disbelief as she saw her younger sister standing unarmed in the crosshairs of four automatic weapons. "Ivy... you... you actually came up?"
"Be quiet, Sarah," Ivy said evenly, not taking her eyes off Julian Sterling.
Julian stepped forward down the stone steps, his polished shoes crunching against the wet gravel. He looked at Ivy with the patronizing amusement of an apex predator inspecting a mouse that had walked voluntarily into a trap.
"I must admit, Ivy, you surprised us," Julian said, gesturing toward the briefcase resting on the portico table. "Arthur assured me you were an incompetent recluse who cared about nothing but spreadsheets and petty family squalors. He didn't realize you were sitting on the master authorization registry for Node Zero."
"Arthur is an idiot who couldn't balance a petty cash drawer," Ivy said coldly. "And you are a thief operating on borrowed time."
Julian chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. "Time is the one asset you don't possess. Hand over the Ledger, enter the biometric authorization on my mobile terminal, and I will let your sister walk. She is completely useless to me anyway."
"And what happens to Meadowgate?" Ivy asked, her voice calm, devoid of any trace of fear.
"Meadowgate will be demolished," Julian said smoothly. "The land will be rezoned as an industrial logistics park. The deep vaults will be emptied, re-routed through our offshore holding companies in Panama and Singapore, and by dawn, Node Zero will cease to exist. The syndicate will control the sovereign debt of four nations."
"A very neat transaction," Ivy said. She unslung the calfskin ledger and held it out in her left hand. "Double-entry at its finest."
Julian reached out his gloved hand to take the heavy volume. "Smart girl. You always knew how to follow orders."
His fingers touched the leather.
At that exact moment, Ivy’s right hand moved.
She did not draw her gun. Instead, she drove her thumb directly into the center of the brass crest embedded in the cover of the Sovereign Ledger.
A high-pitched, piercing electronic tone screamed from within the hollowed spine of the book.
`CIPHER SYNC CONFIRMED.`
`TERMINATION PROTOCOL INITIATED.`
`ORBITAL SATELLITE UPLINK: BROADCASTING REAL-TIME FORENSIC DATA.`
Julian’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute panic. He tried to pull his hand away, but the microscopic micro-filaments concealed within the calfskin binding had already discharged a continuous electrical arc that locked his muscle tissue, freezing his fingers against the surface.
"What did you do?!" Julian gasped, his body trembling under the high-voltage neural stun current.
May you like
"I didn't bring up the real Sovereign Ledger, Julian," Ivy whispered, her eyes burning into his. "I brought up the termination trap. The real ledger never left Sub-Level 7."
