Chapter 58 - The Unbroken Line

That evening, Ivy walked up to the high promontory on the estate known as Eleanor’s Crest. From this vantage point, she could look down upon the entire valley—the sweeping meadows, the dark timber of the forest, the silver ribbon of the river winding into the distance, and the great slate roof of Meadowgate Manor glowing warm in the sunset.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out the antique silver pocket watch.

The watch was ticking smoothly, its brass gears whispering with steady, uninterrupted precision. The microscopic electronic screen beneath the dust cover was dark, having severed its connection once the threat was eliminated. It looked once more like nothing more than a magnificent heirloom.

Ivy ran her thumb across the engraved backplate: *To Ivy Vance. Sovereign and True.*

She remembered the nights she had spent weeping in her small bedroom under the eaves, listening to the laughter of guests downstairs, wondering why she had been born into a family that saw her only as an obstacle or an errand girl. She remembered Victoria’s mocking laughter: *You're a clerk, Ivy. You're made for numbers, not for glory.*

"You were right, Victoria," Ivy whispered into the autumn wind, a faint, triumphant smile touching her lips. "I was made for numbers. And numbers don't lie."

The sun dipped below the western hills, painting the sky in blazing shades of crimson, gold, and deep violet.

For the first time in her life, Ivy Vance felt completely at peace. The debt was settled. The predators were vanquished. Meadowgate was safe.

She turned and began her walk back down the stone path toward the warm, glowing lights of the manor.
