Chapter 66 - The Voice Across the Wire

With the three intruders disarmed and zip-tied to the heavy structural pillars of the mainframe corridor, Ivy stood alone before the towering communication terminal. The turbine fans had spun down to a quiet, steady hum, clearing the remaining haze from the chamber.

On the screen, Eleanor watched her granddaughter with cold, unblinking scrutiny.

"You're angry," Eleanor stated. It wasn't an apology; it was an audit.

"You let them treat me like garbage," Ivy said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper, her hands resting flat on the mahogany console. "You let Arthur belittle me. You let Sarah parade around Chicago calling me her pathetic dependent sister while she took credit for the millions I made balancing her fraudulent acquisitions. You let me believe I was alone."

"If you had known you were the keystone, you would have acted like one," Eleanor responded harshly. "A keystone that advertises its load-bearing capacity gets targeted first. Sarah is a vain, reckless fool whose greed made her entirely predictable. Julian Sterling watched her because she was loud, foolish, and easily manipulated. And while they were watching her steal six hundred thousand dollars, you were quietly auditing the architecture that controls sixty billion."

"Where are you?" Ivy demanded.

"Facility 11. Ellesmere Island," Eleanor said, glancing briefly off-screen at an array of life-support monitors. "The sub-arctic node. When the syndicate attempted to assassinate me eighteen months ago via digital telemetry interference in my pacemaker, I faked my death and moved the primary command hub north. I needed Meadowgate to fall under legitimate legal attack to expose the judicial collaborators in Chicago. You delivered them to me on a silver platter."

"Arthur is in federal custody," Ivy noted. "Sarah is ruined. The regional bank is under FDIC receivership."

"Those are pawns, Ivy. Arthur and Sarah are insects," Eleanor spat. "The real syndicate isn't in Chicago. Chicago was merely their regional collection desk. The second key—the key that opens the physical vaults beneath where you are standing—was stolen thirty years ago by Julian Sterling's father. And Julian is not in Chicago. He is currently twenty miles south of Meadowgate, converging on the estate with the rest of his private board."

Ivy felt the cold weight of the room press down upon her again. "He's coming here himself?"

"He has to," Eleanor said. "The six hundred thousand dollar loan default triggered an automated international foreclosure audit. By law, Node Zero must physically produce the underlying sovereign certificates within forty-eight hours, or the entire reserve is declared abandoned and auctioned to the highest private bidder in Zurich. Julian doesn't need to defeat your defensive grid. He only needs to sit on the surface long enough for the clock to run out."

"How much time is left?"

Eleanor checked a counter at the top of the transmission screen.
