Chapter 60 - The Unmarked Transponder's Final Signal

The grandfather clock in the corner of the study struck midnight with twelve deep, resonant chimes that echoed through the sleeping house.
Ivy stood up, ready to extinguish the desk lamp and retire for the night.
As she reached for the brass switch, a sudden, high-pitched mechanical click cut through the stillness of the room.
Ivy froze.
The sound had come from the desk blotter.
There, resting beside her leather ledger, the silver pocket watch had snapped open of its own accord.
Ivy stared at it, her breath catching in her throat. The gears had stopped. The hands were frozen at twelve o'clock.
Beneath the dust cover, the microscopic LED panel—which had remained completely dark and inactive for over a month—flared to life with a blinding, iridescent blue light.
A series of high-speed data packets began cascading across the tiny display, far faster than the protocols Julian Sterling had used.
`ALERT: LEVEL ZERO PROTOCOL INITIATED.`
`UPLINK ESTABLISHED: ORBITAL DEFENSE CONDUIT #001.`
`SOURCE: REDACTED // FACILITY 11 - SUB-ARCTIC SECTOR.`
`ORIGIN IDENTITY CONFIRMED: ELEANOR VANCE (BIOMETRIC CIPHER ACTIVE).`
Ivy felt her heart violently slam against her ribs. "That's... that's impossible," she breathed. Eleanor Vance had died and been buried in the family crypt eighteen months ago. Ivy had personally verified the death certificate and the clinical records.
The watch emitted a low, electronic chime that resonated with a strange, harmonic frequency.
A new line of text typed across the screen, character by character, as if someone were typing it in real time from an impossibly distant terminal:
`IVY. IF YOU ARE READING THIS, YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY RECLAIMED MEADOWGATE FROM THE SYNDICATE'S SURFACE DIVISION.`
`YOU BELIEVE THE WAR IS OVER.`
`YOU BELIEVE MEADOWGATE IS MERELY AN ESTATE.`
`IT IS NOT.`
`MEADOWGATE IS THE KEYSTONE TO THE CONTINENTAL RESERVE VAULT.`
`AND THEY HAVE JUST DISCOVERED THE SECOND KEY.`
Directly beneath Ivy’s feet, from depths far beyond the 1945 cellar, far deeper than Sector 4 or the bedrock foundations, a seismic shudder rippled upward through the earth—so powerful that the glass of port on her desk shattered, spilling red wine across the white pages of her journal.
Across the room, the hidden panel in the floor behind the fireplace slid back with a deafening metallic screech, revealing a reinforced hydraulic elevator shaft plunging straight down into the black abyss of the earth, a blinking green light calling the carriage upward from the deep.

The watch screen flashed one final, terrifying message:
`THEY ARE ALREADY AT THE PERIMETER. DESCEND IMMEDIATELY.`
