Chapter 43 - The Echoes of Ridge Three

Dusk fell over Meadowgate like a bruised curtain of indigo and charcoal. Ivy stood over the dining room table, where the fine china had been replaced with topographical maps, blue-line schematics, and Clara’s forensic bank tracing sheets. The rain began to fall in heavy, deliberate drops, drumming against the slate roof like distant rifle fire.

"We traced the transaction," Clara reported, tapping her pen against a wire transfer confirmation. "The six hundred thousand dollars Victoria tried to borrow wasn't from a conventional lender. It was backed by an entity called Meridian Horizon LLC, incorporated in Delaware. The ultimate beneficial owner behind three shell corporations is a man named Christian Bale—not the actor, an international liquidation broker operating out of Zurich and Chicago. He specializes in distressed sovereign assets."

"He bought Arthur's debts for pennies on the dollar," Ivy deduced, her finger tracing the contour lines leading up to the third ridge. "Arthur owed them. Victoria thought she was playing high-society chess, but she was just a canary in their coal mine. If they gain physical access to Vault 09 before we establish legal and operational control, they can claim salvage under maritime-analog private domain laws."

"There is more," Marcus said, stepping in from the terrace, his coat dripping with rain. "My perimeter sensors on the north fence just went offline. Not a power failure—the fiber-optic lines were severed with clean pneumatic cuts. Someone is moving up the logging trail toward the abandoned lime kiln at the base of Ridge Three."

Ivy did not hesitate. For three years, her mother and sister had relegated her to dark rooms, calling her cold, unimaginative, fit only for reconciling receipts and counting the cost of their lavish mistakes. They had assumed that because she worked with numbers, she was timid. They had forgotten that numbers are the bedrock of absolute truth—unforgiving, precise, and impossible to intimidate.

"Marcus, arm your men. No civilian authorities—local dispatch is compromised; Arthur had the sheriff on retainer for a decade," Ivy ordered, her voice cutting through the tension with absolute command. "Clara, seal the house and broadcast an encrypted distress packet to Dr. Thorne’s federal liaison. I am going to the lime kiln."

"Ivy, that's suicide," Clara protested, grabbing her arm. "You don't know who is out there in the dark!"

Ivy reached into her pocket and pulled out Eleanor’s index card, turning it over. On the back, written in microscopic ink that only a meticulous bookkeeper would notice, were four rows of numbers: the manual override sequence for Vault 09.

"Eleanor didn't leave this land to Victoria because Victoria would have spent it," Ivy said, her eyes burning with resolve. "And she didn't leave it to Arthur because Arthur would have sold it. She left it to me because I know the exact value of what we own—and what it costs to defend it."
