Chapter 16 - Forensics of Betrayal

Claire stood frozen, the harsh spotlight of the gala chandeliers exposing every crack in her constructed reality. The socialites who had been laughing at her jokes minutes before were now leaning away, whispering behind manicured hands, recording videos on their smartphones.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Ivy addressed the room, her voice commanding, unwavering, and utterly serene. “Mr. Julian Vance is currently subject to a temporary restraining order issued four hours ago by Federal Magistrate Davies. Furthermore, Vance Hospitality’s regional operating accounts have been frozen pending a criminal investigation into interstate bank fraud and fraudulent clouding of land title.”

Two plainclothes federal marshals stepped out from the shadows near the ballroom exit, moving methodically toward the table.

Julian didn't look at Claire. He didn't look at Ivy. He shoved his chair back with a screech of brass legs on hardwood, turning on his heel to flee toward the service entrance—only to be intercepted by the marshals, who neatly boxed him against the velvet draperies.

“Mr. Vance,” one marshal said, his badge gleaming in the ambient light. “You need to come with us.”

As Julian was escorted out through the crowded dining room, Claire was left standing alone in the center of the floor, clutching her evening purse like a drowning woman clinging to driftwood.

She turned to Ivy, her eyes wide, wild, and brimming with tears of humiliated fury.

“You planned this,” Claire gasped, her chest heaving. “You knew the debt was paid! You let me bring him here! You wanted to destroy me in front of everyone!”

“No, Claire,” Ivy said softly, the pity in her voice far more devastating than any rage could have been. “I didn't plan your greed. I didn't make you steal Arthur’s papers. I didn't make you conspire with a corporate predator to tear down our grandmother’s life’s work. You did that all by yourself. You spent your whole life thinking that because you were loud, pretty, and demanding, the world owed you an empire on credit. You forgot that in the real world, the bill always comes due.”
