Chapter 34 - The Siege of the Conservatory

The heavy glass of the conservatory shattered inward with an explosive roar.

Smoke from magnesium cutters rolled down the long gallery, smelling of ozone and burning paint. Samuel fired two warning rounds into the upper molding of the archway, sending chunks of ornate plaster showering onto the marble floor.

"That's enough!" a voice bellowed through the smoke.

Arthur stepped through the breach, flanked by three men dressed in tactical black fatigues, armed with submachine guns held at low ready. Behind them walked Julian Richter—a man in his late fifties with immaculate silver hair, wearing an oilskin trench coat and gold-rimmed spectacles that caught the dim light.

"Ivy," Arthur said, holding out both hands in a mocking gesture of peace. "Do you really want this lovely house turned into a slaughterhouse over a matter of bookkeeping?"

Ivy stepped out from the library shadow, standing dead center in the hallway. She held no weapon, only an ancient, leather-bound volume tied with rotted silk ribbon—the original founding charter of Meadowgate.

"You smell like formaldehyde and cowardice, Arthur," she said without blinking.

Arthur’s smile vanished, replaced by an ugly twitch beneath his left eye. "You disrespectful little clerk. You spent your youth counting pennies in my basement while your sister took center stage. You think because you pulled off a neat legal trick with a board resolution you own this empire? Everything here was built on my daring, my risks!"

"Your risks?" Ivy retorted, taking half a step forward, completely ignoring the weapons pointed at her chest. "You borrowed against your mother's grave before she was even cold. You let Victoria believe she was an heiress while leaving her to take the fall for your Chicago syndicate ties. And now you crawl back here with foreign muscle to dig up the money you couldn't carry when you fled three years ago."

Richter raised a gloved hand, silencing Arthur with a curt gesture.

"Miss Vance," Richter said smoothly, his Swiss-accented English quiet and precise. "Your familial squabbles are irrelevant to my clients. Mr. Vance pledged the physical bearer bonds stored in the subterranean bedrock vault of this estate as surety for a sovereign credit line. We have come to execute the collateral. Hand over the iron key and the coordinates, and we will vacate your property, leaving you to settle your family matters in peace."

"And if I refuse?" Ivy asked.

Richter tilted his head, his eyes cold as glacial ice. "Then Mr. Vance will execute his legal authority as the surviving head of the household to have you forcibly removed as an unlawful occupant. And should you resist... tragic accidents frequently occur in aging country houses during severe electrical storms."

"The key isn't in this house," Ivy said clearly.

Arthur lunged forward, his composure breaking entirely, his hands reaching for her throat. "Liar! Eleanor gave it to you! She gave you everything!"
