Chapter 42 - The Unmarked Cadastre

The woman standing in the center of Eleanor Vance’s great hall introduced herself as Dr. Aris Thorne. She carried neither weapons nor legal summons, but her presence commanded an icy deference that made the estate's remaining domestic staff freeze in their steps. Her hair was cropped silver, her face weathered by wind and high-altitude field sites, and her credentials bore the dual emblem of the Department of the Interior and an obscure private consortium known as the Appalachian Geological Trust.

"Miss Vance," Dr. Thorne said, extending a gloved hand that Ivy pointedly ignored. "I apologize for the unannounced arrival. But as of 2:00 PM today, an environmental contingency easement was triggered under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act. We are here to conduct a seismic and structural survey of Ridge Three."

"You’re trespassing on fee-simple private land," Ivy replied, standing at the base of the grand mahogany staircase. Behind her, Marcus, the head of the newly installed security team, stepped into the light, his hand resting unobtrusively near his utility belt. "Arthur Vance's power of attorney has been voided by court order in Richmond. Victoria has no standing. Any survey permit issued under the Vance Family Trust within the last seventy-two hours is null and void."

Dr. Thorne did not blink. She unclasped the aluminum surveyor’s case, revealing not drilling permits, but a series of high-resolution lidar scans dated from 1968 to the present. The top sheet showed Meadowgate's topography, but beneath the familiar contour lines lay a labyrinthian subterranean network—vast, geometric chambers carved directly into the mountain bedrock.

"Your grandfather didn't just dig a fallout shelter, Miss Vance," Dr. Thorne said quietly, leaning forward so her voice did not carry down the hall. "During the Cold War, Julian Vance was the chief metallurgist for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's subterranean communications array. What lies under the third ridge isn't a private family secret. It’s Vault 09. And forty-eight hours ago, an unauthorized remote ping originated from an IP address registered to your sister's residence in Alexandria, attempting to cycle the air filtration systems."

Ivy felt the room tilt, but her exterior remained carved of marble. Victoria. Victoria, in her desperation to secure leverage after being cut off, had peddled Eleanor’s old keys to whoever promised to keep her social standing alive. Victoria hadn't just tried to rob Ivy of her inheritance; she had opened the door to something that belonged to state intelligence.

"Victoria doesn't have the codes," Ivy said coldly.

"No," Dr. Thorne agreed, her gaze locking onto the breast pocket of Ivy’s vest, where the silver watch rested. "She doesn't. But whoever bought her debt in Chicago does. And they are already inside the boundary."
