Chapter 67 - The Shattered Bastion

The surface perimeter alarms sounded a new, frantic alert.

On the surface monitors, Ivy saw a convoy of black armored SUVs smashing through the ornate iron gates of Meadowgate, plowing down the gravel drive through the ancient oaks. They did not stop at the circular turnaround; they drove straight onto the manicured front lawns, surrounding the smoking ruins of the manor house like a pack of wolves encircling a carcass.

A man stepped out of the lead vehicle. He wore an immaculate charcoal tailored coat, dark leather gloves, and carried a slim aluminum briefcase.

Julian Sterling.

Beside him, dragged roughly from the second vehicle by two security men, was a disheveled woman in an evening gown that was torn and caked in mud.

Sarah.

Ivy sucked in a sharp breath. Her sister looked completely broken, her hair matted, her face pale with terror. Sarah had spent years sneering down at Ivy from behind designer sunglasses, treating her like an unpaid servant who existed solely to correct her balance sheets. Now, she was nothing more than a human shield for a corporate predator.

Julian reached into his coat, pulled out a satellite uplink megaphone, and pointed it toward the hidden exterior audio pick-ups near the destroyed front porch.

"Ivy!" Julian's voice boomed down through the audio conduit, ringing out in the deep subterranean vault. "I know you're down there! And I know you can hear me!"

He yanked Sarah forward by the wrist, forcing her to her knees in the wet gravel.

"Your sister was remarkably cooperative once we explained the mechanics of international asset forfeiture," Julian said with smooth, unhurried cruelty. "She signed every transfer document we put in front of her. But as you know, Sarah's signature is worthless without the Proprietary Executor's biometric counter-seal. Bring the Master Ledger to the surface, Ivy. Bring it up, or your sister's liquidation will be literal, not financial."

Ivy stood motionless before the monitors. Her jaw tightened until her teeth ground together.

"Ignore him," Eleanor's voice commanded over the Arctic link. "Sarah is expendable. She signed her own death warrant the day she attempted to pledge Meadowgate as collateral. Let him pull the trigger. The blast doors are eight feet of reinforced steel. They cannot penetrate Sub-Level 7 before the arbitration deadline expires."

Ivy looked at the monitor. Sarah was weeping uncontrollably, her hands clutching at Julian’s tailored coat as she begged for her life. Sarah was selfish, arrogant, and cruel. She had stolen Ivy's work, taken credit for her achievements, and treated her like dirt for three solid years.

"Ivy," Sarah’s voice broke through the microphone, high and hysterical. "Ivy, please! I'm sorry! I'm sorry about the money! I'm sorry about the house! Please don't let them kill me!"

"She's blood, Grandmother," Ivy said coldly into the console mic.

"Blood is a liability on a balance sheet," Eleanor snapped. "If you open that hatch, you lose the entire Continental Reserve. You throw away everything I built!"

May you like

"No," Ivy said, her hand reaching for the master defense override panel. "You built a bunker. I run the estate."
