Chapter 68 - Shadows in the Conduit

Ivy did not take the lift shaft; it was a ruined tomb of mangled steel. Instead, she took the maintenance access aqueduct—an ancient, narrow brick-lined storm conduit that ran horizontally beneath the estate before surfacing inside the historic carriage house five hundred yards west of the main residence.

She moved in total silence, clad in a lightweight tactical jacket, carrying the calfskin-bound Master Ledger in a waterproof sling across her back. In her right hand was the service sidearm; in her left, the master transponder keyed directly to the estate's subterranean defense grid.

The cold autumn wind struck her like a slap as she pushed open the rusted iron grating beneath the floor of the carriage house.

The rain had turned into a freezing sleet, pattering heavily against the slate roofs of Meadowgate. The night sky was lit by the harsh halogen floodlights mounted on the syndicate’s SUVs.

Ivy moved through the shadowed tree line, keeping low behind the overgrown boxwood hedges her grandmother had planted fifty years ago. She knew every inch of this ground—every contour, every drainage dip, every unmapped surveyor's peg. Sarah had only ever looked at the estate as an aesthetic backdrop for cocktail parties; Ivy had mapped its topography during her property tax appeals.

Two guards stood watch near the western perimeter of the lawn, their backs to the woods, their rifles held at the low-ready.

Ivy reached into her jacket and pressed a sequence on the transponder.

`TRIGGER: PERIMETER IRRIGATION DRAINAGE - ZONE 4.`

A sudden, sharp release of pressurized nitrogen hissed from a concealed manifold thirty yards to the guards' left.

The two men spun instantly toward the noise, weapons raised, stepping off the gravel path to investigate.

Ivy slipped past them like a ghost in the dark, crossing the sodden grass until she reached the perimeter of the floodlit terrace.

Julian Sterling stood under the shelter of the portico, checking a platinum pocket watch. Behind him stood four heavily armed private contractors. Sarah was still on her knees on the stone steps, shivering violently in the freezing rain.

"Two minutes, Ivy!" Julian shouted into the darkness, his voice echoing off the brick facade. "Two minutes, and we proceed with the summary execution! After that, my engineers will begin the core-drilling operation with thermic lances! You cannot stay down there forever!"

"She doesn't have to," Ivy’s clear, steady voice rang out from the shadows directly behind the western balustrade.

The four guards instantly snapped their rifles toward the sound, but before they could fire, Ivy stepped out into the blinding glare of the floodlights—her empty hands raised, the leather sling holding the Master Ledger clearly visible across her chest.

"Hold fire!" Julian barked, holding up a gloved hand, a triumphant, predatory smile spreading across his face. "Hold your fire! The bookkeeper has finally decided to be reasonable."
