Chapter 9 - A New Beginning

It was a bright, crisp Saturday in late April.

Cassidy stood in the middle of a sunlit living room with hardwood floors and large bay windows that overlooked a manicured neighborhood park.

It wasn't a sprawling estate, and it didn't have a history of familial toxicity attached to its walls. It was a cozy, modern two-bedroom condo located just ten minutes away from Simone's townhouse—purchased entirely in Cassidy’s name, with a healthy down payment funded by her recovered savings and a mortgage she comfortably paid all by herself.

The doorbell rang, and Cassidy walked over to open it.

Wren stood on the threshold, holding a potted monstera plant in one hand and a box of bakery pastries in the other, smiling from ear to ear.

"Welcome to your new home!" Wren cheered, stepping inside and wrapping Cassidy in a tight hug.

"Thank you, sweetie," Cassidy laughed, taking the plant and setting it carefully on the windowsill where the afternoon sunlight streamed through.

They spent the afternoon unpacking kitchen boxes, hanging framed art, and laughing over takeout pizza on the living room floor—just the two of them, safe, secure, and entirely free.

A few days earlier, Cassidy had received a brief, stilted text message from Eleanor. We're settled into the apartment now. Dad's back is hurting a lot, and things are tight. If you ever want to talk...

Cassidy hadn't replied. She hadn't felt angry, or guilty, or vindictive. She had simply archived the message, locked her phone screen, and gone back to cooking dinner.

Some relationships could be repaired with time and genuine remorse. Others were built on quicksand from the very beginning, designed to pull anyone who stood too close down into the dark. Cassidy had finally stepped onto solid ground, and she had no intention of ever looking back.
