Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

The confrontation came on a cold Saturday morning in mid-December.
Cassidy was sitting at the kitchen island in Simone’s townhouse, reviewing financial spreadsheets for her job, when the doorbell rang.
Simone peered through the peephole. "Cass... it's your dad and Brent. They look furious."
Cassidy took a deep breath, stood up, and walked to the front door, pulling it open.
Arthur stood on the porch, his face flushed red from the cold and rage, leaning heavily on a cane. Brent stood behind him, crossing his arms and glaring with sullen hostility.
"Are you out of your mind?!" Arthur barked, his voice booming across the quiet suburban neighborhood. "Serving legal papers to your own parents? Do you have any idea what kind of humiliation this is?"
Cassidy didn't flinch. She stepped out onto the porch, pulling the door partially closed behind her.
"The only humiliation here, Dad, is that you spent four years lying to me, forging my name on financial documents, and treating me like a servant while funding Brent's lazy lifestyle."
Brent stepped forward, his face twisting into a snarl. "You think you're so smart, don't you? Walking out like some kind of hero. Without us, you were nobody in that house!"
Cassidy looked Brent up and down, letting out a dry, contemptuous laugh.
"Without you, Brent, I would have saved fifty thousand dollars over the last four years, bought my own home, and built a real future. You've been a parasite for a decade. Enjoy the foreclosure sale, because the court date is locked in, and my lawyer isn't backing down."
Arthur stared at his daughter, perhaps seeing for the first time that the sweet, compliant girl who had always said yes was gone forever, replaced by a woman who refused to be broken.
"Cassidy... please," Arthur said, his voice cracking slightly, the anger suddenly deflating into pathetic desperation. "We have nowhere to go. If the house sells, we'll be on the street."

"Then I suggest Brent gets a job," Cassidy said coldly. "Real jobs exist. He should try one."
Without another word, Cassidy turned on her heel, walked back inside Simone’s townhouse, and locked the door behind her, leaving her father and brother standing alone on the porch.
