Chapter 62 - The Architects of Ridge Road

The air on the abyssal catwalk tasted of salt, iron, and machine grease preserved in vacuum. Every step Cassidy took resonated through the metal decking, sending ripples through the silence that had reigned undisturbed for decades. Arthur followed, his surveyor's compass spinning aimlessly, completely blinded by the massive magnetic currents running through the walls.
"The Pacific Maritime & Geodetic Trust," Arthur said, reading the raised lettering above the heavy blast hatch of the primary bunker. "My father spoke of them once. He claimed they were a private consortium formed during the Great Depression to secure strategic natural deepwater conduits along the Cascadia subduction zone. But the federal government seized all private holdings under the War Powers Act in 1941."
"They didn't seize this," Cassidy said, pointing to the brass inspection plate beside the primary airlock. "They privatized it into a private closed-end trust. And they needed a bloodline proxy on the surface to maintain the deeded access rights without triggering federal land-reclamation statutes."
She approached the console flanking the vault door. Unlike the modern touchscreens of Level 4, this interface was an analog-digital hybrid—heavy toggle switches, rotary relays, and an optical scanner designed for physical parchment documents. On the desk lay an unsealed leather portfolio, its edges yellowed with age, bearing the original parcel registration for the land on Ridge Road.
Cassidy pulled out the document she had brought from the surface: the finalized judgment from the Lane County Circuit Court, bearing Judge Miller’s embossed seal and the certified quitclaim deed that had stripped Donald Vance of every legal claim he had ever fabricated.
She slid the certified deed into the scanner tray. A warm cathode light hummed to life beneath the glass, tracing the legal description of the boundary lines, the notarized signatures, and the proprietary ink stamps.
A clanking relay clicked inside the console. A series of hydraulic locking pins, each the diameter of a telephone pole, withdrew from the circular vault door with a succession of thunderous thuds that rattled the teeth in Cassidy's jaw.
The door swung inward on greased pivots, revealing a central rotunda dominated by rows of mechanical tabulators, reel-to-reel tape drives, and an elevated circular monitoring platform overlooking a series of submerged glass conduits that descended into a luminous blue abyss beneath the floor.
"Arthur, look at the dates," Cassidy said, walking toward the central station.
Mounted on the circular perimeter wall were framed land patents dating back to the late nineteenth century. Every single deed bore the same family lineage, but with a horrifyingly specific pattern: the titles were never transferred to the oldest sons. They were systematically, legally, and contractually vested in the eldest surviving daughters, who were then subjected to private indentures disguised as domestic mortgages.
"Eleanor knew," Arthur gasped, leaning against a brass balustrade. "She knew Donald could never hold the title. The original Trust covenants forbade male heirs from inheriting the operational nexus because of a cross-default clause written into the 1932 incorporation charter."
"Donald was never the golden child because of his merit or his character," Cassidy said, the bitterness in her throat hardening into pure, unyielding resolve. "He was the distraction. Eleanor kept him pampered, incompetent, and dependent so he would never look past the surface. She threw me into the workforce at nineteen, charged me every dime of the mortgage, and told me I was nothing more than an ungrateful tenant, because the moment I stopped paying, the default notice would trigger an automatic forensic audit of the entire mountain."
The main terminal screen flickered to life. A green phosphor cursor began typing across the glass:
`CONDUIT MONITOR ACTIVE.`
`SURFACE OVERRIDE EXECUTED BY: CASSIDY ELEANOR VANCE.`
`TITLE: SOVEREIGN EXECUTOR, TRUST HOLDING 0-RIDGE.`
`CURRENT OUTSTANDING DEBT ON RECORD: $0.00.`
`SYSTEM STATUS: REPOSSESSION IMMINENT.`
"Repossession?" Arthur asked, alarmed. "Repossession of what?"
May you like
"Of everything my mother and brother tried to steal," Cassidy said.
