Chapter 55 - Breach at the Perimeter Wire

The sound of sirens was different in the mountains. It didn't arrive as a sudden wail, but as a low, mournful howl echoing off the fir-clad ridges, swallowed by the dense fog and amplified by the granite canyons.

Outside, the mist was illuminated by sweeping red and blue beacons. Three Lane County Sheriff cruisers and two unmarked black Suburbans with federal government plates ground to a halt in the circular gravel driveway, their tires churning up mud and pine needles.

Arthur Vance lowered his sidearm, engaged the safety, and slipped it into his tactical holster. He walked to the kitchen window, parted the broken blinds with two fingers, and nodded once.

"The marshals are here," Arthur said. "Harrison Cross was intercepted at the airstrip in Cottage Grove. His pilot tried to file a flight plan for Vancouver, but Homeland Security flagged the tail number."

Eleanor struggled to her feet, leaning heavily against the granite countertop that Cassidy had wiped clean dozens of times. Her fingers trailed over the polished stone, trembling. "Arthur... what is going to happen to the house? Where are we supposed to go?"

"You had a home, Eleanor," Arthur said, his voice flat and unforgiving. "You had a daughter who paid your mortgage, repaired your gutters, and kept the roof over your head. You cast her out like a stray dog to placate this worthless coward." He pointed his thumb at Donald, who was still curled on the linoleum, clutching the useless manila folders to his chest. "The house belongs to Cassidy. It has belonged to Cassidy since the day she filed the partition deed and Clara’s trust activated."

The front door burst open. Deputy Martinez stepped inside, his hand resting on his service holster, flanked by two federal agents in windbreakers marked *FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION — SPECIAL SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS DIVISION.*

"Federal agents! Nobody move!" the lead agent announced, flashing a badge before his eyes fell upon Arthur Vance. The agent instantly lowered his stance, coming to a sharp, respectful attention. "Director Vance. We received the silent perimeter trip forty minutes ago."

"The intruders have dispersed into the western timberline, Agent Vance," Arthur said, acknowledging the agent with a curt nod. "Private contractors employed by Harrison Cross. Recover the brass cipher cylinder from the north vent array before they attempt to sabotage the pneumatic seals."

"Understood, sir. Tactical teams are already sweeping the ridge," the agent said. He turned his attention to Donald Vance, who was attempting to crawl beneath the kitchen table. "Donald Vance?"

"I didn't do anything!" Donald screamed, his voice pitching into a hysterical shriek. "It was Cassidy! She set this up! She’s trying to steal my house! Ask my mother! Tell them, Ma! Tell them she’s trespassing!"

Eleanor looked at Donald. For the first time in thirty-five years, the veil of maternal blindness was violently ripped from her eyes. She saw the man she had coddled: grease-stained sweatpants, cowardice dripping from every pore, ready to drag his entire family into federal prison just to save his own skin.

Then she looked at Cassidy. Cassidy stood tall, her jacket buttoned, her posture unyielding, holding the leather-bound ledger that contained every legal receipt, every canceled check, and the unbroken chain of custody of the Vance bloodline.

"Eleanor Vance," Deputy Martinez said gently, stepping forward with a set of standard county paperwork. "Do you have anything to say regarding the breach of the protective order filed by Cassidy Vance?"

Eleanor swallowed hard. A single, dry sob broke in her throat. She looked down at the shattered remains of her kitchen, then closed her eyes.

"Donald brought those men here," Eleanor whispered, her voice barely audible above the hum of the kitchen clock. "He broke the door. He told them he would give them the papers. Cassidy... Cassidy has always told the truth."

Donald shrieked an obscenity, thrashing as the two federal agents pinned him to the floor, wrenched his arms behind his back, and snapped the steel cuffs around his wrists.

"Donald Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit industrial espionage, federal wire fraud, and grand larceny," the lead agent recited coldly, hauling the thirty-five-year-old man up by his armpits.

Donald’s boots dragged across the floorboards as they marched him out into the rain, his screams echoing out into the dark timber until the door of the cruiser slammed shut, cutting off the noise forever.
