Chapter 83 - The Fracture at Latitude 47

The floor beneath Cassidy gave a sickening heave.

A violent shockwave tore through the ridge, snapping two of the primary timber support posts in the basement beneath her. Dust cascaded from the exposed cedar beams overhead, blanketing the workstation in fine white plaster.

Cassidy grabbed the edge of the desk to keep from falling. Through the reinforced triple-pane windows of the living room, the night sky above the Pacific Northwest coast was no longer dark. A faint, bioluminescent turquoise glow was pulsing along the western horizon, rising from the waters of the Puget Sound like an aurora borealis born of the abyss.

The terminal screen began scrolling with frantic maritime seismic telemetry:

`EVENT: SUB-OCEANIC DISPLACEMENT`

`LOCATION: 47°12'N, 122°45'W`

`DEPTH: -1,200 METERS`

`THERMAL PLUME DETECTED: 410°C`

`CRUSTAL FISSURE PROPAGATING EASTWARD TOWARD RIDGE ROAD.`

Valerie wasn't just remote-controlling a computer terminal; she was commandeering a deep-sea industrial geothermal tap. Decades of Cross-Continental's illicit offshore drilling had carved massive caverns beneath the continental shelf, pressurized by supercritical water and molten rock. The only thing that had prevented the whole basin from collapsing into an underwater trench was the counter-frequency generator anchored into the bedrock right beneath Cassidy’s bedroom floor.

The $1,845 mortgage payment had been the exact cost of the continuous liquid-nitrogen coolant shipments disguised as residential heating oil deliveries.

When Cassidy walked away from the house, the payments stopped. The oil ran dry. The cooling stopped. The bedrock began to melt.

"You're going to drag half the county into the sea," Cassidy yelled into the comms unit, scrambling across the tilting floor to the emergency breaker panel mounted on the western wall. "There are towns along this coast! Thousands of people who have nothing to do with Cross-Continental!"

"Collateral damage has always been built into the corporate prospectus, Cassidy," Valerie replied smoothly. "When Eleanor evicted you from your bedroom twenty-four hours after you stopped paying, she thought she was just clearing space for Donald’s streaming setup. She had no idea she was unbolting the containment door. They thought they owned this ground. Tonight, they find out what this ground actually feeds on."

Cassidy wrenched open the steel door of the breaker panel. Behind the standard residential circuit breakers lay the black, classified chassis of the Boreas Phase-Coupler. Two heavy tungsten interlocking keys stuck out from the central housing.

To stop the seismic pulse, she had to reverse the polarity of the acoustic field. But the manual override required two operators—or one operator willing to endure thirty thousand volts of electrostatic blowback.
