Chapter 81 - The Firstborn of Ridge Road

The red light on the emergency seismic console pulsed in sync with the violent thrumming in Cassidy Vance’s temples. On the primary glass monitor, the digital counter dropped with ruthless mechanical precision: `00:09:42... 00:09:41...`

Outside, the hundred-year-old Douglas firs encircling the perimeter of Ridge Road groaned against an invisible, subterranean shear force. It wasn’t wind. It was the bedrock itself twisting miles below, sending harmonic micro-tremors through the reinforced concrete foundations of the home Cassidy had sacrificed her youth to pay for.

Cassidy leaned over the terminal, her palms planted flat against the brushed-steel console, staring directly into the lens of the optical interface.

"Identify yourself," Cassidy demanded, her voice cutting through the speaker static with cold steel. "The Cross-Continental corporate charter was dissolved by federal injunction two days ago. Eleanor’s accounts are frozen. Donald is locked in federal processing. There is no one left to authorize this uplink."

A low, humorless laugh drifted through the audio transducer. It sounded so uncannily identical to Cassidy’s own pitch and cadence that it sent a visceral chill down her spine.

"Eleanor was an uninspired caretaker, Cassidy. A bitter, small-minded woman who thought she could purchase peace by coddling an incompetent boy while bleeding you dry for every cent of that mortgage," the woman’s voice replied, smooth and devoid of human warmth. "Did you really believe an eighteen-hundred-and-forty-five-dollar monthly remittance was just a bank note? Did you think the deeds of Ridge Road were drawn up by rural county clerks?"

A low hum surged through the floorboards. The auxiliary lights flickered, switching from fluorescent white to the dim amber of independent battery cells.

`00:08:14... 00:08:13...`

"My name is Valerie," the voice said, the transmission clearing as the secondary relay on the coast locked onto Ridge Road’s terminal. "I was born six years before Eleanor decided she was incapable of producing a biological heir that could survive the atmospheric stabilization chambers beneath the Sound. You were manufactured, Cassidy. Spliced from my genetic baseline, carried by Eleanor under corporate contract, and calibrated to serve as a biological fail-safe. Why do you think Donald was pampered like a prince while you were made to scrub the floors and foot every single bill?"

Cassidy’s fingers tightened on the edge of the console until her knuckles went stark white. "Donald was an entitled parasite because Eleanor and Arthur never told him no."

"Donald was a decoy," Valerie said smoothly. "A loud, arrogant distraction to keep local code enforcement, county assessors, and regional utilities from looking too closely at Ridge Road. A lazy son who never leaves his childhood bedroom doesn't arouse federal suspicion. But a brilliant, quiet daughter who pays eighteen hundred and forty-five dollars on the dot every month? That specific sum was the exact operational maintenance fee required to power the acoustic dampening field for Trench Eleven."

The teletype emulator clacked rapidly, printing out twenty-year-old financial ledgers across the screen. Every transaction Cassidy had ever made through her first banking app was listed side by side with cryptographic authorizations bearing the insignia of Boreas Corporation.

"You funded the prison that held me," Valerie whispered, her voice tightening with razor-sharp malice. "And now that you’ve broken the manifold, Trench Zero is coming to the surface."
