Chapter 80 - The Sealed Protocol of Trench Zero

The evening fell quietly over the mountain.

Richard had retired to the newly renovated guest suite on the second floor, sleeping deeply and peacefully under thick woolen blankets, the windows cracked open to let in the sweet scent of cedar and pine. Arthur had driven back to the city to file the final land registry deeds with the county clerk.

Cassidy sat alone in her new office—formerly the bedroom Donald had stolen from her, now stripped of his clutter and furnished with clean, modern bookshelves, a drafting table, and the secure Boreas master terminal, which had been rerouted from the bunker to her desk for environmental monitoring.

On the screen, the diagnostic telemetry from Trench Eleven showed completely green. The pressure relief loops were operating at nominal status. The automated concrete injection pumps were scheduled to begin sealing the lower shafts at midnight, burying the dark history of Richard’s thirty-year imprisonment beneath two hundred tons of quick-curing hydraulic aggregate.

She took a sip of herbal tea, ready to initiate the final lockdown command that would permanently sever the computer link to the deep rift.

She clicked the command prompt: `COMMENCE PERMANENT SHAFT SEAL.`

The terminal chimed.

`CONFIRMATION REQUIRED: ENTER PRIMARY TRUSTEE BIOMETRIC KEY.`

Cassidy placed her thumb against the scanner mounted on the terminal base. A bright blue laser swept across her skin.

`BIOMETRIC CONFIRMED: CASSIDY VANCE.`

`PREPARING FOR SYSTEM TERMINATION...`

Suddenly, the screen froze.

The green telemetry lines vanished, replaced by an aggressive, strobe-like flicker of deep amber text. The smooth mechanical hum of the house’s heating system abruptly cut out, plunging the room into absolute silence.

Cassidy leaned forward, her brow furrowing. "What is this?"

She tapped the override key, but the keyboard was completely unresponsive.

Across the center of the display, words began typing themselves onto the screen, accompanied by the sharp, mechanical clack of a teletype emulator:

`CRITICAL OVERRIDE: REMOTE TELEMETRY SEVERED.`

`BOREAS PROTOCOL 1845 CANNOT BE CLOSED.`

`SOURCE: EXTERNAL COMMAND HUB.`

Cassidy’s heart skipped a beat. She stood up, staring at the monitor. "External? Cross-Continental was liquidated."

Then, a low-frequency hum began to rise—not from the basement beneath the house, but from deep within the bedrock miles to the north, vibrating through the structural framing of Ridge Road with an intensity that rattled the windowpanes.

The terminal flashed:

`TRENCH ELEVEN IS NOT THE PRIMARY VAULT.`

`TRENCH ELEVEN WAS A MANIFOLD RELAY.`

`RECEIVING CARRIER SIGNAL FROM TRENCH ZERO: LATITUDE 47° N, SEATTLE SUB-OCEANIC TRENCH.`

`CONNECTION ESTABLISHED WITH: THE ARCHITECT.`

A line of scrambled acoustic audio burst through Cassidy’s desktop speakers, crackling with the crushing static of immense depth. But beneath the distortion came a voice that made Cassidy’s breath freeze in her throat.

It was not Eleanor. It was not Donald. It was not her father.

It was a woman’s voice—crisp, authoritative, terrifyingly familiar, speaking with the identical vocal resonance that Cassidy heard in her own voice every time she spoke.

*"Good evening, little sister,"* the voice whispered through the static, cold as an arctic gale. *"Did you really think Eleanor was the mother who gave you away? You paid to keep our father alive... but Trench Zero belongs to the firstborn. And I'm opening the gates tonight."*

On the desk before Cassidy, the green status light on the emergency seismic monitor flared blinding, violent red—as the countdown timer on the screen suddenly reset to `00:09:59` and began ticking backward.
