Chapter 85 - The Ghost in the Sub-Level Vaults

The air inside the maintenance crawlspace smelled of ozone, stagnant ocean water, and ancient sulfur.
Cassidy slid down the vertical ladder, descending past Sub-Level 1, past the concrete footing where Donald had spent years playing video games in ignorance, down into the unmapped bedrock shafts of Sub-Level 5.
Here, the walls were not drywall or pine studs. They were solid, black basalt, reinforced with hydraulic titanium shoring struts that groaned under immense oceanic pressure. Pipes wrapped in frost-covered insulation ran alongside the catwalk, hissing as supercritical coolant surged through their joints.
`COUNTDOWN SUSPENDED BY PHYSICAL BREACH.`
`OVERRIDE DETECTED: MANUAL DEMOLITION PRIMED.`
The automated overhead voice in the shaft confirmed what Cassidy feared: Valerie’s strike team had planted thermal breaching charges directly onto the primary acoustic anchors beneath the house.
If those anchors blew, the entire ridge would slide into the coastal fault line, triggering a sub-sea tsunami that would obliterate the coast from Olympia to Vancouver.
Cassidy reached the base of the shaft. Ahead lay a massive blast door stamped with the faded emblem of Cross-Continental Mining: *FACILITY ZERO — DEEP ACOUSTIC RELAY*.
The door was already cracked open an inch, its hydraulic seals hissed open with fresh pneumatic grease.
Cassidy raised her crowbar, stepping silently through the gap.
Inside the chamber, bathed in the sickly green light of rows of server racks and chemical coolant vats, stood a single figure.
It wasn't a soldier.
She wore a streamlined, pressurized flight suit, her long dark hair tied back in an austere knot. Her facial features—the sharp jawline, the slight arch of the left brow, the pale grey iris of her eyes—were a living, breathing reflection of Cassidy herself, aged half a decade forward.
Valerie Vance turned slowly to face her.
"You shouldn't have come down here, Cassidy," Valerie said quietly. She held a tactical detonator in her gloved right hand, her thumb hovering millimeters above the armed red trigger. "You should have taken your car and driven east toward Idaho. You might have outrun the initial landslide."
May you like
"And let you drown half the state because our parents were monsters?" Cassidy asked, stepping onto the metal grating of the catwalk, her crowbar held low, balanced. "Eleanor and Arthur ruined my life, Valerie. They stole my twenties. They made me pay for Donald’s pathetic existence while they kept me trapped. But killing thousands of innocent people isn't justice. It’s madness."
"Justice?" Valerie laughed, a sound like grinding ice. "You think this is about justice? Look around you, clone. You think this facility was built to mine copper?"
