Chapter 9 - The Purge of the Syndicate

By noon the following day, the Duca estate on Long Island was the site of an emergency assembly of the syndicate's governing council.
Twelve regional captains—men who controlled the harbors, the construction unions, the transport networks, and the financial shells across three states—sat around the massive mahogany table in the main dining hall.
The mood was tense, thick with suspicion and quiet dread.
At the head of the table sat Alessandro Duca.
To his right stood Marco Duca, cleaned, dressed in a sharp black suit, his physical strength returning as he stood tall beside his brother once more.
To Alessandro’s left sat little Mia, wearing a neat navy dress, sipping a glass of apple juice while resting her small silver wolf pendant on the table.
In the center of the room, kneeling on the cold marble floor with heavy iron cuffs around his wrists and ankles, sat Robert Langley.
His face was pale, his eyes sunken, his designer suit ruined by dirt and blood.
Alessandro looked slowly across the faces of his twelve captains.
“Ten years ago,” Alessandro spoke, his voice carrying the calm, absolute authority of a Don who had reclaimed his absolute domain, “this man told you my brother Marco was dead. He told you the Valenti family murdered him. And for ten years, you accepted his word because he carried my father’s trust.”
The captains looked at Marco in stunned, silent disbelief. Many of the older captains had tears in their eyes seeing the rightful eldest son of the house standing alive and well.
“Robert Langley did not protect this family,” Alessandro continued, pointing a finger at the kneeling traitor. “He stole two hundred million dollars from our accounts. He sold our security codes to rivals. And he locked my brother in a cage in the mountains.”
Alessandro stood up, resting his palms on the heavy mahogany table.
“The Duca family does not tolerate traitors,” Alessandro declared coldly. “And we do not allow those who threaten our children to live.”
He looked at Viktor.
“Take him to the harbor,” Alessandro ordered. “Let the Valenti family know what happens to men who break treaties with the Duca dynasty.”
Robert Langley opened his mouth to scream, to beg for mercy, but two guards shoved a heavy cloth gag into his mouth and dragged him out of the hall for the last time.

The twelve captains stood up in unison, bowing their heads deeply to Alessandro and Marco.
“Long live Don Alessandro!” the oldest captain announced. “Long live the Duca family!”
