Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Hallway

A sudden red flash illuminated the concrete walls of the war room.
BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
A silent alarm triggered on the secondary monitor.
The pressure-sensitive floor grid in the corridor three levels above had just registered a footfall. Someone was descending the private spiral staircase leading down to the war room.
At 4:30 in the morning.
Alessandro moved with instant, terrifying grace. In one fluid motion, he scooped Mia off her feet, pulling her small body against his chest, and stepped behind the heavy steel partition that sheltered the primary power units.
He pressed a finger to his lips, looking down at the little girl.
Mia didn't make a sound. She wrapped her small arms around his neck and tucked her head into his shoulder, her thumb slipping into her mouth.
Alessandro drew the Beretta from his shoulder holster, his thumb flicking the safety off with a silent click.
The heavy steel door of the war room hissed open.
Polished leather shoes stepped onto the concrete floor. The sound was slow, deliberate, confident.
Through the narrow gap in the steel partition, Alessandro watched Robert Langley walk into the dim room.
Robert was sixty-two, impeccably groomed, wearing a dark gray silk robe over his trousers, carrying a brass key identical to the one in Alessandro’s pocket. In his right hand, he carried a suppressed 9mm pistol.
Robert stopped in front of the central monitor.
His eyes widened in shock as he saw the open files, the decrypted security logs, and the silent blue-green node fully exposed across all three screens.
“What the hell...” Robert muttered under his breath, his calm demeanor cracking as he realized the master system had been thoroughly dismantled.
He leaned over the keyboard, frantically trying to input a wipe command to erase his internal IP address from the log files.

“The system doesn't accept override commands from dead men, Robert,” Alessandro’s voice echoed through the cold vault.
Robert froze.
