Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Dark

Alessandro stepped out from behind the steel partition, holding Mia securely on his left hip while his right hand kept the Beretta aimed precisely between Robert Langley’s eyes.
Robert slowly turned around. For a fraction of a second, panic flared in his old, calculating eyes, but he quickly forced his face into a smooth, familiar smile of fake concern.
“Alessandro!” Robert said, his voice smooth as oil. “Thank God you’re down here! I saw an anomaly on my security tablet upstairs and came down to check on the servers. What is going on? Who is this child?”
“Her name is Mia,” Alessandro said, taking a slow step forward. “She’s Marco’s daughter.”
Robert’s smile faltered. The color slowly drained from his face, leaving his aged skin looking like yellowed parchment under the fluorescent lights.
“Marco...?” Robert stammered. “Alessandro, that’s impossible. Marco died ten years ago in New Jersey. The Valenti family—”
“The Valenti family had nothing to do with it,” Alessandro interrupted, his voice dropping an octave into a register of pure, lethal iron. “You shot Marco in the back on the icy bridge. You stole his access codes. And when he survived, you spent ten years using his private network node to drain two hundred million dollars from my family’s offshore accounts.”
Robert raised his left hand placatingly, while his right hand holding the suppressed pistol remained lowered at his side.
“Alessandro, listen to me,” Robert pleaded, his voice taking on the manipulative fatherly tone he had used to guide Alessandro for a decade. “I raised you! When your father died, I protected this family! I built your alliances! You cannot trust the ramblings of a random child and some corrupted code!”
“She didn't just bring code, Robert,” Alessandro said softly, nodding toward the central monitor behind Robert’s head. “She brought Marco’s master drive. It contains ten years of recorded phone calls between you and the Valenti syndicate. It contains the exact location where your men are holding my brother right now.”
Robert’s eyes darted to the screen, seeing the satellite coordinates flashing in bright yellow text near the bottom of the map:
Pocono Mountains. Sector 4. Warehouse 12.
Robert’s face hardened. The mask of the loyal consigliere dissolved completely, revealing the cold, mercenary monster underneath.
“You were always too sentimental, Alessandro,” Robert sneered, his hand twitching as he raised his suppressed pistol. “Just like your father. You let blood cloud your judgment.”
