Chapter 2 - The Echo of Marco Duca

The silence in the war room was absolute.

The green light from the triple monitors bathed Alessandro’s sharp jaw and the child’s small frame in an eerie, underwater hue. Outside, the subterranean cooling fans whirred, a monotonous drone that suddenly felt miles away.

Alessandro slowly lowered himself onto his right knee. The tailored fabric of his suit pants pressed against the cold concrete floor. For the first time in ten years, the Don of the Duca syndicate felt his hand shake as he reached toward the pendant.

He didn't touch her. He simply extended two fingers, resting his knuckles against the edge of the mahogany desk.

“What is your name, sweetheart?” he asked, his voice stripped of the harshness that kept a hundred armed men in line.

“Mia,” she said, her voice small but steady. “Mia Duca.”

The surname landed in the room like a heavy iron weight.

“Your father... Marco,” Alessandro whispered. “Is he alive?”

Mia nodded, a stray tear cutting a clean path through the smudges of dust on her left cheek. “He was alive three days ago. Then the men with the black coats came to our house in the woods. Daddy locked me in the secret cellar under the floorboards. He told me to take his coat, take his silver wolf, and use his laptop to run through the forest to the train station.”

“He sent you here?”

“He gave me a black drive,” Mia said, reaching into her oversized jacket pocket. She pulled out a small, steel flash drive wrapped in heavy electrical tape. “He said if I ever got scared, I had to put this into the big screen in the big house on Long Island. He said his brother Alessandro would be here. He said you were the only man who could stop the ghost.”

Alessandro took the steel drive. It was cold, smelling faintly of pine resin and gun oil.

“How did you get past the security gates, Mia?” Alessandro asked, looking into her young face. “How did you get into this room? The biometric doors—”

“Daddy programmed my thumb three years ago,” Mia explained simply. “He said his blood was the same as your blood. He said your house would know my hands because the house was built by our grandfather.”

Alessandro closed his eyes for a single second.

Marco had built the underlying architecture of the Duca security system before his disappearance ten years ago. When Alessandro took over as Don at twenty-five, he had expanded the system, but he had never altered the foundational biometrics that recognized the primary bloodline of the family. The system hadn't been breached by an enemy. It had welcomed a daughter of the house home.

“Who took your father, Mia?” Alessandro asked, opening his eyes, the cold, lethal focus returning to his gaze.

Mia pointed a thumb backward toward the central monitor, right at the blue-green node she had identified moments earlier.

“The man who owns the silent room,” she whispered. “The man who sits at your dinner table every Sunday.”

Alessandro felt the blood drain from his face.
