Chapter 3 - The Fingerprint in the Code

Alessandro plugged the steel flash drive into the primary diagnostic port beneath the central terminal.

Lines of green and silver code began to cascade down the three screens at terrifying speed. Files unopened for a decade began to unseal themselves, decrypted by Marco’s master key.

Mia stood beside his knee, watching the screens without fear. She had been raised in isolation by a master strategist and engineer; numbers and data maps were as familiar to her as children's picture books were to other little girls.

“Look,” Mia whispered, pointing her small finger at a line of encrypted log files opening on the left monitor. “The silent node didn't start today. It started six years ago.”

Alessandro leaned over the keyboard, his long fingers flying across the keys as he bypassed the secondary encryption layers Marco had left behind.

The silent node was a tap. A permanent, invisible pipeline routing real-time security data, shipment schedules, and financial transactions straight out of the Duca mainframes. But it wasn't routing the data to an external rival like the Valenti or Moretti families.

It was routing the data to a private server hidden inside the Duca mansion itself.

Specifically, inside the East Wing residence.

Alessandro stared at the IP address stamped on the routing logs.

192.168.1.104.

He knew that internal address. It belonged to the personal terminal in the study of Robert Langley—the family’s chief consigliere and Alessandro’s late father’s most trusted friend.

Robert Langley had been like a second father to Alessandro after the old Don passed away. He was the man who had placed the Don’s ring on Alessandro’s finger. He was the man who managed the family’s offshore trusts, who sat at his right hand during council meetings, who smiled at Sunday dinners and raised toasts to the longevity of the Duca dynasty.

“Robert...” Alessandro breathed, the reality of the betrayal settling into his chest like jagged glass.

“He told the bad men where Daddy was hiding,” Mia said, her tiny voice breaking the heavy silence. “Daddy caught him stealing from the accounts six years ago. Daddy was going to tell you, but Mr. Langley found out first. He ambushed Daddy in New Jersey ten years ago, but Daddy didn't die. Daddy escaped to the mountains and hid.”

“Why didn't Marco come back to me?” Alessandro asked, his chest tightening. “Why didn't he come to his brother?”

“Because Mr. Langley told Daddy that you were the one who ordered the hit,” Mia said, looking directly into Alessandro’s eyes. “Daddy thought you wanted the crown for yourself. He believed it for nine years... until last month, when he finally hacked back into your private server and realized you were still searching for his body every single year.”

Alessandro grabbed the edge of the desk so hard the wood groaned beneath his grip.

Ten years of grief. Ten years of carrying the weight of his brother’s ghost while keeping a snake in his inner circle. Robert Langley had played them both—keeping Marco hiding in fear in the frozen northern wilderness while convincing Alessandro that his brother was dead at the hands of rivals.

And all the while, Robert had been quietly draining the empire’s wealth, setting up the Duca family for a final, catastrophic collapse that would leave him in total control of the East Coast syndicate.
