Chapter 5 - The Sheriff, the Board, and the Illusion of Power

Inside the grand ballroom of Hawthorne Ridge Estate, the atmosphere was thick with champagne, expensive perfume, and manufactured celebration.

Four hundred of the East Coast’s most elite power players—bankers, corporate executives, politicians, and socialites—mingled beneath towering crystal chandeliers. A string quartet played softly in the corner, though few guests were listening to the music. Instead, all eyes were focused on the front row, where Victoria and Grant Wycliffe held court like royalty welcoming their subjects.

Victoria wore an emerald-green St. John suit that practically radiated triumphalism. She held a crystal flute of vintage champagne, smiling graciously as several prominent society matrons praised the unexpected “romantic twist” of the morning.

“It’s simply marvelous, Victoria,” cooed Eleanor Vance, wife of a prominent federal judge. “Everyone was whispering about that little art teacher from Brooklyn, but Madison? Well, Madison is family. She belongs in this world.”

Victoria took a sip of her champagne, her eyes gleaming with vindictive satisfaction. “Thank you, Eleanor. Adrian simply had a temporary lapse in judgment—youthful rebellion, you know how brilliant engineers can be. But blood always calls to blood. He realized this morning that his future belongs with someone who understands our legacy.”

A few feet away, Grant Wycliffe stood talking in low, conspiratorial tones with County Sheriff Thomas Miller, a heavy-set man whose campaign had been generously funded by Wycliffe political action committees for over a decade.

“Everything is under control, Sheriff?” Grant asked, swirling his scotch.

Sheriff Miller nodded smoothly, tapping the silver star pinned to his breast pocket. “Absolute control, Grant. Your private security team has the perimeter locked down tight. No unauthorized personnel, no media, and no disruptions. If anyone tries to cause a scene outside those gates, my deputies will back up your guards before anyone notices.”

“Good,” Grant muttered, his eyes scanning the crowded room. “Adrian is being stubborn, of course. Boys always think they can defy their fathers until reality sets in. Once he’s standing at the altar with Madison in front of four hundred witnesses, he’ll fall in line. Wycliffe Global Freight cannot afford public scandals.”

At the front of the aisle, standing near the floral arch of white lilies, stood Madison Vale.

She looked breathtaking in a designer silk-and-tulle gown—though any observant eye would have noticed it was slightly too tight across the shoulders, tailored for someone else entirely. Her golden hair was swept up in an elaborate chignon, and a self-satisfied smirk played across her lips. She had waited years for this moment. Victoria had promised her the throne, and Madison was ready to claim it.

“Is everything ready?” Madison whispered as Victoria glided past her toward the altar.

“Everything is executed to perfection, darling,” Victoria murmured back, squeezing Madison’s gloved hand. “Adrian will be brought down the moment the string quartet cues the Bridal Chorus. Just keep smiling for the cameras.”

Neither Victoria, nor Grant, nor Sheriff Miller had any inkling that outside the estate, the ground was beginning to vibrate.
