Chapter 4 - The Prisoner of the East Wing

While Emily and Rachel stood trapped outside the iron gates, the interior of Hawthorne Ridge Estate was a masterclass in calculated deception.
Inside the opulent east guest wing, the heavy oak door of Room 304 remained firmly bolted from the outside. Inside the sunlit, antique-furnished suite, Adrian Wycliffe stood by the floor-to-ceiling French doors, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle ticked violently in his cheek.
He wore a crisp white dress shirt, his bespoke tuxedo jacket draped over the back of an armchair, but his tie was loosened. His phone lay shattered on the Persian rug—a casualty of his initial attempt to contact Emily when the security lockout began at dawn.
There was a sharp knock at the door, followed by the heavy, grating voice of one of the private security guards stationed outside.
“Mr. Wycliffe, your mother requests your presence in the grand foyer. The first wave of guests has arrived, and Ms. Vale is finishing her hair adjustments.”
Adrian didn’t turn around. His voice, when it came, was dangerously quiet, carrying a cold authority that made the guard outside hesitate.
“Tell my mother that if she doesn’t open this door in the next sixty seconds, I will personally ensure that every license her hired thugs hold is revoked before sunset.”
“I’m just following orders, sir,” the guard replied, though his voice lacked conviction. “Mrs. Wycliffe made it clear that you are to remain here until the ceremony begins.”
Adrian closed his eyes, taking a slow, calculated breath.
For years, he had played the dutiful son just enough to keep the peace while building his own independent ventures in European sustainable shipping logistics. He had deliberately kept Emily shielded from the ruthless machinations of his parents, believing that love and normalcy could eventually bridge the gap between their worlds.
He had underestimated Victoria’s desperation.
She truly believed she could rewrite reality. She believed that by locking him away, parading a compliant pawn like Madison Vale in a stolen dress, and leveraging her social clout, she could bully her son into compliance. She thought she was the apex predator of this family empire.
She had no idea she was playing chess against a ghost.
Adrian walked over to the mahogany writing desk in the corner of the room. Hidden beneath the velvet lining of his leather briefcase—which his mother’s guards had foolishly left intact, assuming it contained only wedding vows—sat a secure satellite communication device.
He picked it up, pressed a series of encrypted alphanumeric keys, and held the receiver to his ear.
A crisp, precise voice answered on the first ring.
“Sovereign Command, Geneva. Identify.”
“This is Adrian Wycliffe-Roth,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, chilling command. “Code Red at Hawthorne Ridge Estate, New York. My parents have breached sovereign trust agreements, enacted unlawful detainment, and interfered with an international diplomatic wedding.”
The operator on the other end of the line instantly snapped to attention. “Confirmed, Your Grace. Standing orders?”
“Initiate Protocol Vanguard,” Adrian ordered coldly. “Deploy the European executive convoy immediately. Mobilize the federal diplomatic marshals on standby in Westchester County. And instruct the financial division to execute immediate liquidation recall on all Wycliffe Global Freight corporate credit lines.”
“Understood, sir. The convoy is twenty minutes out. We will secure the perimeter.”

Adrian clicked the device off, slipped it into his pocket, and turned toward the locked door. A thin, dark smile touched the corners of his mouth.
Let them play their game, he thought. The board is about to burn.
