Chapter 3 - The Betrayal Inside the Mansion

“Call the wedding planner,” Rachel commanded, her voice sharp with rising panic as cars began piling up behind their limousine—sleek Bentleys, polished Mercedes sedans, and private black town cars carrying early-arriving guests who were now craning their necks out of tinted windows to see what was happening at the gate.

Emily didn’t hesitate. She dialed Lauren Hayes, the lead coordinator for Hawthorne Ridge Estate events.

It rang twice before a shaky voice answered. “Emily? Em, listen to me, I—”

“Lauren!” Emily interrupted, her voice cracking with desperation. “What is happening at the gate? Your security guards won’t let us in, and they’re claiming my access has been revoked by Victoria! Where is Adrian? Why isn’t he answering his phone?”

On the other end of the line, there was a heavy, suffocating silence, punctuated only by the muffled sound of weeping.

“Lauren?” Rachel shouted into the speaker. “Talk to us! What kind of circus is running over there?”

Before Lauren could answer, a small electric golf cart appeared from around the bend inside the estate grounds, speeding down the paved driveway. It skidded to a halt twenty feet behind the security blockade.

Lauren Hayes was driving. Her hair was disheveled, her designer blouse rumpled, and her eyes red-rimmed and swollen with tears. She looked utterly terrified, as if she had just escaped a war zone.

“Lauren!” Emily cried out, running toward the iron bars. “Tell them to open the gate! Tell them this is insane!”

Lauren didn’t move from the driver’s seat. She gripped the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles were stark white. She couldn’t even meet Emily’s eyes.

“Lauren, open it!” Rachel demanded, storming up to the barrier.

“I can’t,” Lauren whispered, her voice breaking into a sob. “God help me, Emily... I tried. I argued until my voice gave out. But I can’t.”

Emily’s hands went completely numb. The veil behind her fluttered helplessly in the wind. “What do you mean you can’t? It’s my wedding! Adrian is inside waiting for me!”

Lauren slowly raised her head, looking at Emily with an expression of pure, unadulterated horror.

“Victoria changed everything at four o’clock this morning,” Lauren whispered, the words trembling on her lips. “She brought in her own private security firm, bypassed the estate staff entirely, and threatened to sue my company into bankruptcy and ruin my reputation across the entire tri-state area if I refused to comply.”

“What did she change, Lauren?” Emily demanded, terror gripping her throat. “What could she possibly change on the morning of the wedding?”

Lauren stared down at the rubber floor mat of the golf cart. Then, she uttered a sentence that seemed to freeze time itself.

“She changed the bride.”

The entire world appeared to tilt off its axis. The wind died down. The honking of cars behind them faded into a distant, meaningless hum.

“What?” Emily whispered, the word escaping her lips like a ghost.

“Madison Vale is inside,” Lauren said, her voice shaking uncontrollably.

Emily stared at the coordinator, her mind rejecting the information completely. “Madison? Madison Vale? Victoria’s goddaughter? The investment heiress she’s been trying to force on Adrian for five years?”

“Victoria told everyone you and Adrian had a massive blowout and ended things at dawn,” Lauren sobbed, wiping her face with a trembling hand. “She announced to the early arrivals, the catering staff, and the family friends that Adrian suddenly ‘saw the light’ and realized Madison was the woman he was always meant to marry.”

Rachel made a violent, strangled sound of pure rage. “That psychotic, manipulative witch! That’s kidnapping and fraud! Where is Adrian? If he’s in that house, why hasn’t he thrown his mother out on the street?”

Lauren glanced nervously toward the massive stone manor house looming in the distance behind the trees.

“He’s locked in the east guest wing,” Lauren whispered.

Emily’s breath caught. “Locked?”

“Victoria confiscated his phone, shut off his keycard access, and posted four armed guards outside his door,” Lauren explained hurriedly, glancing back toward the house as if afraid someone would see her talking to them. “She thinks if she forces him downstairs in front of four hundred elite guests—investors, high-ranking politicians, reporters, and his father’s board members—he’ll be too proud or embarrassed to make a scene. She thinks she can trap him into marrying Madison.”

Rachel immediately whipped out her own phone. “I’m calling the police right this second. This is criminal confinement!”

Lauren shook her head frantically, her eyes wide with terror. “Don’t bother, Rachel. Grant Wycliffe invited the county sheriff as his personal guest of honor. He’s already inside.”

That single sentence struck Emily with the force of a physical blow. Grant Wycliffe, Adrian’s father and chairman of Wycliffe Global Freight—one of the largest private maritime logistics empires on the East Coast—wielded immense political and financial influence. In their world, money bought silence, badges, and compliance.

For three years, Emily had believed she knew Adrian completely. She knew his gentleness, his brilliance, his quiet dedication to sustainable energy transport, and his deep alienation from his cold, corporate family. But standing outside those gates, watching the nightmare unfold, Emily realized that neither she nor Victoria truly understood the depths of who Adrian Wycliffe was—nor the terrifying magnitude of the forces standing behind him.
