Chapter 84 - Blood over the Chesapeake

"The grandfather," I said, studying the dossier on the screen. "The one who started the entire dynasty on government defense contracts during the Cold War."

"He’s been living on *Aegis-One*," Cole explained, zooming the satellite map onto a classified position eighty miles off the Virginia Capes. "It was originally built as an ultra-deepwater drilling platform, but Sterling Corporation retrofitted it three years ago into an autonomous offshore command bastion. It sits in international waters, just outside U.S. territorial jurisdiction. It has its own point-defense missile batteries, private security fleet, and deep-sea submarine docking slips."

"And that’s where the master control servers are," Abigail said, leaning closer to the terminal. "The Sterling family didn't just hide money. They built an automated financial kill-switch. If Harrison Sterling activates the final protocol, every asset tied to their dummy corporations—trillions of dollars in global energy grids, defense supply chains, and sovereign wealth funds—will self-liquidate into untraceable decentralized currencies. It will collapse the national economy overnight."

"He’s cornered," Frank observed, cleaning a smudge of carbon from his rifle barrel. "We wiped out Marcus. We dismantled Claire Vance’s legal machine. We broke their domestic stronghold in Charlotte and Virginia. Harrison knows the walls are closing in. He's going to flip the table."

"He won't flip it while I'm breathing," I said. "Cynthia, what tactical assets do we have within strike range?"

Admiral Cole tapped her radio console. "The USS *Farragut*, a guided-missile destroyer, is operating forty miles south. But we have a political problem, Victoria."

"I don't give a damn about political problems."

"You should," Cole warned quietly, switching the screen to a live news feed.

The television monitors showed the exterior of the White House press room. A breaking news banner crawled across the bottom of the screen: *ATTORNEY GENERAL ANNOUNCES ARREST WARRANT FOR FOUR-STAR GENERAL VICTORIA GARDNER FOR UNAUTHORIZED DOMESTIC MILITARY OPERATIONS.*

"The Directorate’s puppets inside the civilian government just made their move," Cole said grimly. "They’re claiming the operation in Quail Hollow, the strike at the private clinic, and the explosion at Drydock 4 were an unprovoked military mutiny led by you. The Pentagon is currently locked down under Defcon 3. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs has been ordered to stand down all naval and air assets until an emergency congressional inquiry convenes tomorrow morning."

Abigail gasped, turning to me. "Mom... they're calling you a traitor. After everything you did... after how they tortured me..."

I slowly reached out, placed my hands on Abigail’s shoulders, and looked directly into her eyes. My pulse hadn't spiked by a single beat.

"Listen to me, Abigail," I said, my voice steady, resonant, and unwavering. "A uniform is just cloth. The stars on my shoulders are just brass. Honor isn't granted by politicians in Washington, and it certainly isn't taken away by corrupt officials on a billionaire’s payroll. When they locked you in that basement, when Marcus Sterling struck you and told you that no one was coming to save you because their wealth made them gods, they forgot one fundamental law."

"What law, Mom?"

"The law of retribution," I replied. "They thought their money made them untouchable. They thought the system belonged to them. Now, we take the battle beyond their system."

I turned back to Admiral Cole. "Cynthia, how fast can you fuel the stealth insertion helicopter?"

Cole looked at me for three long seconds. Then a thin, dangerous smile crossed her face.

"The MH-60M Silent Hawk is on the subterranean pad, Victoria. Armed with Hellfire missiles and manned by an all-volunteer crew who wouldn't care if the President himself ordered them to stand down. But you won't have air cover. Once you cross the twelve-mile international limit, you are completely on your own."

May you like

"Good," I said, pulling an assault vest over my chest and clicking the ceramic trauma plates into place. "That means I don't have to worry about collateral damage."
