Chapter 58 - Retribution in the Blast Chamber

I didn't wait for Julian to finish his speech.

In asymmetric warfare, the moment the enemy begins to gloat is the exact moment his tactical awareness drops by forty percent.

I threw a high-yield flashbang grenade straight through the opening of the blast door, directly into the cluster of mercenaries guarding the lower tier.

The detonation was deafening in the enclosed concrete chamber—a blinding, concussive roar of white light and twelve thousand decibels that shattered the glass terminals and sent three Cerberus operators stumbling backward, clutching their ruptured eardrums.

"Move!" I barked.

Abigail and I entered the room firing in perfect synchronization.

My MP7 barked in three-round bursts, dropping the two sentries on the left flank before they could shoulder their rifles. Abigail, moving with a terrifying, fluid precision that no one would have ever expected from a corporate research scientist, dropped to one knee behind a heavy steel server rack and emptied her magazine into the mercenaries on the right platform.

"Kill them!" Julian screamed, his arrogant composure instantly shattering into high-pitched hysteria as he scrambled back toward the control console. "Kill the old man! Take the girl alive!"

Gunfire tore through the operations center. Heavy caliber rounds punched through server towers, sending showers of blue sparks and shattered circuit boards raining down onto the polished floor.

I broke cover, sprinting diagonally across the kill zone, drawing the fire of the remaining three mercenaries toward myself. Bullets stitched the floor at my heels, one grazing my thigh, another tearing away my tactical vest’s side plate with a blunt, jarring impact that cracked two of my ribs.

I didn't slow down. I vaulted over the lower console, slamming into the chest of a six-foot-four mercenary, driving my combat knife upward through his armpit, beneath the edge of his body armor. He collapsed with a wet gasp. I stripped his dropped rifle from his hands in mid-fall and fired from the hip, blowing the head off the second operator before he could re-engage Abigail.

The last mercenary turned to run toward the upper dais, but Abigail’s round caught him squarely in the back of the knee, dropping him screaming to the floor, followed by a second round that silenced him permanently.

In less than twenty-five seconds, the room was silent except for the hum of the dying cooling fans and the frantic, shallow breathing of Julian Vance.

Julian was backed against the master control console, the golden gun shaking violently in his manicured hand. His pristine suit was covered in concrete dust and the blood of his own men.

"Stay back!" he shrieked, leveling the pistol at Abigail as she stepped through the smoke, her MP7 held at the low ready, her eyes dead and cold. "Stay back, Abby! I’ll blow this entire console to hell! I’ll destroy the keys! You’ll never turn the power back on! The world will die in the dark, and it will be your fault!"

Abigail didn't stop walking. Her combat boots stepped over the bodies of his bodyguards, the steady *clack-clack* of her heels echoing through the high-vaulted granite chamber.

"You aren't going to destroy anything, Julian," she said softly.

"I loved you!" Julian yelled, his voice cracking, spit flying from his lips. "I gave you everything! A mansion! Unlimited research funding! And you threw it in my face to run back to your pathetic, washed-up father!"

"You didn't give me anything," Abigail replied, stopping five paces from his trembling barrel. "You locked me in a room. You let your mother dictate which thoughts I was allowed to have. You hit me when I refused to sign over the encryption rights to my mother's estate."

Julian’s eyes darted wildly toward me. I was standing ten feet to his flank, my weapon leveled directly at the bridge of his nose.

"General!" Julian gasped, terror finally breaking through his narcissism. "Tell her! You’re a man of honor! You’re a soldier! You follow the Geneva Conventions! You can't execute an unarmed man—I have intelligence on Claire! I have the master passwords!"

I looked at the contusions on my daughter's neck. I remembered the sound of her voice over the phone weeks ago, crying out from the dark of that Virginia cellar while Julian laughed in the background.

"Julian," I said, my voice steady, merciless, and calm as the grave. "I am a soldier when I am fighting for my country."

I lowered my rifle by two inches.

"Right now, I am only a father."

Julian’s eyes widened in realization. He spun his gun toward Abigail’s chest, but Abigail was already faster.

She didn't use her rifle. She stepped forward, slapped his wrist aside with the hardened steel receiver of her MP7, breaking his forearm with a sharp, sickening snap, and drove her palm straight into his nose, driving the cartilage into his skull.

Julian dropped to his knees, howling in agony, clutching his shattered face as blood poured between his manicured fingers.

Abigail picked up his dropped golden pistol from the floor. She racked the slide, ejecting a live round, then pressed the cold muzzle directly against his forehead.

"Sign the abort command, Julian," she whispered.

"No..." Julian sobbed, blood running into his mouth. "My mother... she’ll kill me... she’ll erase me..."

"Your mother isn't here," Abigail said. "I am."
