Chapter 31 - Echoes of the Dead

The freezing Adirondack wind tore across the snow-swept clearing, whipping burning embers from the wreckage of the transport into the gray twilight. Yet the bitter frost could not compare to the cold, paralyzing silence that struck every operative in the perimeter the moment that voice crackled through my chest rig.

*"Hello, Eleanor. It’s time we talked about why I really stayed in the dark."*

The frequency was dead clear, stripped of static by military-grade quantum encryption. Twelve years. For four thousand three hundred and eighty days, I had lived with the image of a flag-draped casket being lowered into the sacred soil of Arlington. I had wept until my tear ducts were scarred. I had rebuilt myself into an iron fortress, a three-star general who bowed to no mortal power, all to honor the memory of Colonel Richard Gardner.

Beside me, Abigail staggered, her knees buckling. I caught her under the arm with reflex honed by forty years of combat training, pulling her flush against my tactical vest. Her hands trembled violently as she gripped the fabric of my uniform.

"Mom..." she whispered, her voice cracking, eyes dilated with pure, unadulterated shock. "That's... that's Dad. Tell me I'm hallucinating. Please tell me I'm losing my mind."

I didn't answer her immediately. I reached up with a steady, gloved hand, depressed the push-to-talk toggle on my collar, and took a slow, measured breath. The rage that surged through my veins didn't burn hot; it dropped to sub-zero temperatures, sharpening my vision until every pine needle in the forest stood out in hyper-focused clarity.

"Identify yourself by operational serial and callsign," I commanded, my voice flat, lethal, giving away nothing. "Or I will trace this transmission and turn whatever bunker you are hiding in into a glass crater."

A soft, mournful chuckle came over the wire—a sound that used to soothe me to sleep in our quarters in Fort Bragg, now twisted into an instrument of psychological warfare.

*"Serial number 774-91-882. Callsign: Paladin,"* the voice replied, smooth and articulate. *"You always were the tactical mind, Eleanor. Never letting sentiment cloud your perimeter. But this isn't an impersonation, and it isn't an AI reconstruction. It’s me. And we don't have time for disbelief. The Sterling syndicate was never the apex predator. They were simply the hounds I unleashed to keep you and Abigail occupied until the pieces were aligned on the grand board."*

"You son of a bitch," I hissed, the radio trembling slightly against my chest. "You let Victor Sterling abuse our daughter? You let his family starve her, lock her in a basement, beat her until her ribs broke, all for a tactical diversion?"

*"Abigail's suffering was an unfortunate necessity to draw your full division into the open, Eleanor,"* Richard answered, utterly detached from human empathy. *"Had you remained at the Pentagon, your vigilance would have caught the ledger discrepancies. But a mother blinded by vengeance? You tore through the Sterlings exactly as I modeled in the simulation. You cleared the board of my corrupt business partners, and you brought Abigail straight to the extraction coordinates. Now, look up."*

A thundering sonic boom rattled the frozen peaks. High above the cloud line, the contrails of two scramjet interceptors split the stratosphere, racing south toward the capital.

Major Vance sprinted up the slope, his weapon lowered, his eyes wild with terror. "General! SATCOM just severed all civilian relays across the Eastern Seaboard! The White House is on total lockdown under Continuity of Government directive zero! The automated launch protocols... they're spinning up the silos in North Dakota!"

I looked at Abigail. The tears on her bruised cheeks had frozen in the biting wind, but beneath the horror in her eyes, I saw the Gardner iron sparking back to life. She reached down, picked up a discarded SIG Sauer sidearm from a fallen mercenary, and racked the slide with a clean, sharp snap.

"He left me to rot, Mom," Abigail whispered, her jaw tightening. "Whoever that is... he isn't my father. Kill him."

I pressed the radio toggle one last time. "Richard. You broke our daughter's heart once when you died. You won't live long enough to do it again. I'm coming to Washington. And I am bringing the entire United States Army with me."

*"I wouldn't expect anything less, my love,"* the dead man replied. *"I'll see you in the bunker."*

The line went dead with a high-pitched digital whine.

I turned to Vance. "Get that Chinook down now. Strip all non-essential gear. We are flying nap-of-the-earth straight down the Potomac. We have a traitor in the heart of our republic, and I intend to pull him out by the throat."
