Chapter 20 - The Signal in the Dark

The move to the sprawling command suite at Fort Belvoir marked the pinnacle of my thirty-two years in uniform. From this installation, I oversaw the entirety of Army Logistics Command—a global apparatus moving millions of tons of materiel across six continents.

Abigail lived twenty minutes away in Old Town Alexandria, in a sunlit brownstone lined with bookshelves and filled with the laughter of friends she had made through her work at Homeland Security. On weekend mornings, we met along the river walk, sharing pastries and watching the scullers slice through the Potomac mist. The horror of Quail Hollow had receded into the realm of old scar tissue: visible, yes, but no longer capable of bleeding.

Or so I had allowed myself to believe.

It was an unseasonably warm Thursday in November when the teletype machine in my inner security vault—the one reserved exclusively for Red-Line Priority alerts from the Defense Intelligence Agency—began to chatter with urgent, mechanical franticness.

I stepped into the vault, closing the heavy steel bank door behind me, sealing out the hum of my staff offices.

The printout was stamped with a classification marking I had seen only twice in my career: *TOP SECRET // ORCON // NOFORN // SPECIAL COMPARTMENTED ACCESS.*

The text was brief:

*TO: MAJ GEN E. GARDNER, CG AMC*

*FROM: DIA / SPECIAL ACTIVITIES DIVISION*

*SUBJECT: OPERATION COLD VAULT / SEC-DEF PRIORITY*

*1. AT 0415 HOURS LOCAL TIME, AN ARMORED CONVOY TRANSPORTING INMATE ARTHUR STERLING FROM U.S. PENITENTIARY FLORENCE TO THE DENVER FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTER WAS AMBUSHED ALONG U.S. ROUTE 285.*

*2. THREE FEDERAL MARSHALS KILLED IN ACTION. AMBUSH WAS CONDUCTED BY A MILITARY-GRADE SORENSON TACTICAL CELL USING MIL-SPEC THERMITE AND JAVELIN ANTI-ARMOR MUNITIONS.*

*3. INMATE ARTHUR STERLING WAS NOT EXTRACTED.*

*4. INMATE ARTHUR STERLING WAS EXECUTED AT THE SCENE WITH A SINGLE POINT-BLANK SHOT TO THE TEMPLE.*

*5. RETRIEVED FROM THE BODY OF THE LEAD HITMAN: A MANIFEST DETAILING CLASSIFIED PROCUREMENT LOGS FROM YOUR LATE HUSBAND’S FORMER DEFENSE COMMAND IN BRUSSELS, DATED 2011.*

*6. RECOVERED CELL PHONE CONTAINS ONE OUTGOING TEXT MESSAGE SENT AT 0422 HOURS TO AN UNREGISTERED SATELLITE NODE IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA:*

*"THE OLD MAN IS SILENCED. NOW WE TAKE THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER."*

The paper trembled slightly in my grip, not from fear, but from the volcanic surge of adrenaline that turned my vision razor-sharp.

Arthur hadn't been the architect of the smuggling ring. He was merely the domestic distributor. The network Julian and his father had served went back a decade—rooted in the mysterious death of my late husband in Germany, a thread I had spent ten years believing was an accident of war.

My personal cell phone buzzed in my pocket.

I pulled it out. The screen showed an incoming call from Abigail’s direct line at Homeland Security.

I swiped the green icon, bringing the phone to my ear. "Abby?"

There was no voice on the other end.

May you like

Only the wet, heavy sound of an engine idling, followed by the muffled, metallic clink of a military-grade rifle bolt sliding home, and then a strange, distorted mechanical voice whispering through the speaker:

"General Gardner. Look out your office window."
