Chapter 38 - The Sovereign Countdown

*T-MINUS SIXTY SECONDS.*

The heat hit me the moment the blast door slid back.

A blinding, sapphire-blue haze filled the air—Cherenkov radiation shimmering through the ruptured cooling pipes of the underground backup generator. The air tasted of bitter copper and ozone, burning my throat with every breath. Alarms shrieked in frequencies that made my teeth ache.

My skin prickled as if thousands of microscopic needles were puncturing my flesh.

"Fifty yards to the primary circuit," I told myself through gritted teeth. "Left foot, right foot. Move, General. Move!"

I ran through the knee-deep radioactive coolant water, splashing through the electrified mist. Ahead, behind a heavy panel of reinforced lead-glass, the core server rack stood like a black monolith, its warning indicators flashing in rhythm with the launch timer.

*T-MINUS FORTY-FIVE SECONDS.*

My vision blurred at the edges, tunneling into static. The radiation was already cooking my cellular structure. My lungs screamed for clean air, but I forced my legs to pump, slamming my shoulder into the lead-glass door, shattering the emergency seal.

Inside the server bank, the manual abort housing was locked behind a titanium lock-box requiring the twin cryptographic inputs.

I slammed Richard's bloody signet ring into the left keyway.

*KEY ONE RECOGNIZED: COLONEL RICHARD GARDNER.*

"Eleanor! Input your readiness code now!" Vance's voice crackled through my earpiece, warped and degraded by the extreme electromagnetic radiation of the core.

I reached for my neck, pulling out my own dog tags, snapping off the miniature USB ledger containing my three-star command authorization key. I shoved it into the second port.

*KEY TWO RECOGNIZED: LIEUTENANT GENERAL ELEANOR GARDNER.*

*AUTHORIZATION CONFIRMED: INITIATE MANUAL SYSTEM PURGE? (Y/N)*

The master circuit breaker was a massive iron lever, rusted by decades of underground moisture, jammed by a bent structural support beam that had warped under the seismic pressure of the missile silo activations.

*T-MINUS TWENTY SECONDS.*

"It's jammed!" I coughed, blood rising into my mouth as the radiation tore through my respiratory tract. "The breaker won't drop!"

Over the radio, through the static, I heard Abigail's voice—clear, commanding, cutting through the wail of sirens:

"Mom! The pneumatic valve on the left cooling pipe! Overpressure it! Use the steam blast to crack the hinge!"

I didn't think. I didn't question. I reached out, grabbed the cast-iron emergency valve of the superheated steam line, and turned it with every ounce of strength remaining in my dying muscles.

*HIIIIIIISSSSSSSSS!*

Superheated steam erupted from the fractured pipe, scorching my hands and arms, but the concussive pressure wave slammed directly into the rusted support beam, snapping the oxidized iron in two.

*T-MINUS TEN SECONDS.*

*NINE.*

*EIGHT.*

I threw my entire body weight onto the master lever.

"NOT ON MY WATCH!" I screamed, roaring against the dying light.

The iron lever slammed down.
