Chapter 67 - The Bastard’s Ledger

"Abigail, look at Claire!" I shouted, dropping Sterling’s limp, gasping body to the floor. "Check her person! The Vance family never trusted anyone—especially not their generals! Julian kept a dead-man's switch on his mother, and she kept one on him!"
Abigail ran to the fallen matriarch.
Claire Vance was breathing shallowly, her shoulder soaked in dark arterial blood. Abigail knelt beside her, ignoring the blood, her hands methodically searching the linings of Claire’s designer jacket.
"Nothing in the pockets," Abigail said, her breath coming in ragged gasps. "Wait..."
She reached for Claire’s neck. Suspended beneath her silk shirt was a heavy, platinum pendant—not a piece of jewelry, but an industrial-grade cold-storage hardware token, encrusted with microscopic gold contacts.
"It’s an Aegis Tier-Zero hardware key," Abigail gasped, holding it up to the light. "Julian had an identical port on his private server in Quail Hollow!"
Claire’s eyes fluttered open. She looked up at Abigail—the woman she had imprisoned in a basement, the woman she had tried to erase from existence.
"Use it..." Claire whispered, her voice barely audible over the roaring thunder of the ascending rockets. "Kill him... Abigail... kill... Arthur..."
Abigail didn't look at her with vengeance. She looked at her with pure, cold efficiency. She yanked the chain from Claire’s neck, sprinted back to the primary console, and slammed the hardware token into the master encryption slot.
The screens flashed from crimson to blinding amber.
*TIER-ZERO MASTER REQUISITION DETECTED.*
*WELCOME, DIRECTOR VANCE.*
*SELECT COMMAND:*
*1. OVERRIDE ORBITAL TRAJECTORY.*
*2. ENGAGE RANGE-SAFETY SELF-DESTRUCT.*
*3. PURGE LOCAL SYSTEM ARCHIVE.*
"Option two!" I yelled, stepping back to the dais, picking up the fallen HK45. "Blow them in the upper atmosphere before they deploy the kinetic payloads!"
"The self-destruct requires an encrypted authorization pass-phrase!" Abigail’s fingers hovered over the keyboard. "It’s a twenty-four-character alphanumeric string! We don't have it! Claire doesn't have it—Julian set the phrase before we raided the safehouse!"
"Think, Abby," I said, my hand resting firmly on her trembling shoulder. "Julian was an arrogant, narcissistic sociopath. Everything he did, every password he ever created, was tied to his delusion of control over you."
Abigail froze.
The roar of the rockets was fading, replaced by the high-pitched telemetry beacon tracking their ascent through the stratosphere.
*TIME TO PAYLOAD RELEASE: 00:01:45...*
*00:01:44...*
Julian Vance. The man who had locked her in the dark. The man who had whispered in her ear every night that she was nothing, that her family was nothing, that the Vance name was the only god she would ever be permitted to worship.
"The wedding," Abigail murmured.
"What?"
"The date we were married," she whispered, her eyes widening as memories she had spent months trying to bury resurfaced with razor-sharp clarity. "He made me repeat it every time he locked the door. But not the real date. The date his father signed the merger with Aegis. October seventeenth, nineteen ninety-nine. Followed by his favorite Latin motto."
Her fingers struck the keys with furious, unstoppable certainty:
*10171999_NON_OMNIS_MORIAR*
She pressed ENTER.
For three seconds, the entire underground bunker seemed to hold its breath.
Then, through the reinforced observation glass overlooking the Arctic sky, two brilliant flashes of light—brighter than the midday sun—bloomed at the edge of the earth’s curvature.
The telemetry screens flared white, then dissolved into static.
*KINETIC PAYLOADS DESTROYED.*
*TELEMETRY LOST.*
*SYSTEM RESTORE INITIALIZED.*
Abigail collapsed back into the operator’s chair, her chest heaving, tears of absolute exhaustion and relief finally breaking through her stoic mask.

"It’s over," she whispered. "Dad... we stopped them."
"Not yet," a raspy voice coughed from the floor.
