Chapter 9 - Healing the Heart

The last threat had been eliminated once and for all.
The estate returned to a quiet, serene rhythm.
Over the next year, the mansion transformed from a cold, silent fortress into a warm, vibrant home filled with light, flowers, and the sweet sound of a child's laughter.
Sarah had chosen not to leave for Boston. She had stayed at the estate, not as a maid, but as Lily's beloved aunt and a managing trustee of the Moretti Foundation.
One sunny afternoon in October, Dante took Lily to the small hillside cemetery overlooking the ocean in Montauk—the place where Elena rested peacefully beneath a white marble stone surrounded by blooming wild lilies.
Dante wore a simple black suit. Lily wore a white wool coat and held a tiny bouquet of pink roses in her small hand.
They walked up the stone path hand in hand.
Lily stopped before the gravestone, placing the roses gently against the marble.
"Hi, Mommy," Lily said softly, her small voice floating on the ocean breeze. "Daddy tells me stories about you every night. He says you loved the birds."
Dante knelt beside his daughter, placing one arm around her small shoulders, resting his hand over hers.
He reached into his vest, unfastening the silver swallow necklace, and placed it gently around Lily's neck, fastening the clasp securely behind her brown curls.
"Your mother gave me this bird so I would never lose my way," Dante whispered, tears glistening in his eyes. "And she brought you back to guide me home."
Lily looked down at the shiny silver pendant resting against her coat, then wrapped her tiny arms around Dante’s neck, hugging him tight.
"I love you, Daddy," Lily whispered into his ear.

Dante closed his eyes, holding his daughter close against his chest, feeling the warmth of her breath, the steady beat of her heart.
The heavy weight of grief that had pressed against his soul for four long years finally lifted, drifting away like blossom petals on the sea breeze.
