Chapter 7 - Rebuilding the Broken

The purge of the traitorous elements within the syndicate was swift and absolute.
Within forty-eight hours, the Falcone crime family was dismantled by federal indictments based on the evidence Dante strategically leaked to the authorities. The Moretti family's illegal operations were systematically liquidated, turned into legitimate real estate, shipping, and charitable enterprises.
Dante was done with the shadows.
Three weeks after the night at the foundry, the sun broke through the spring clouds over the Moretti mansion.
In the private garden, near the cherry blossom tree, a small wooden swing set had been built.
Lily sat on the swing, her small legs pumping back and forth while laughing delightfully as the breeze caught her hair.
Sarah sat on the stone bench nearby, watching the girl with a gentle, cautious smile. She wore a simple summer dress now, no longer the tired, ragged clothes of a desperate maid.
Dante walked out from the terrace carrying two glasses of fresh lemonade and a small plate of fruit.
He handed a glass to Sarah, sitting down beside her on the bench.
"You don't have to stay here as a housekeeper anymore, Sarah," Dante said softly, watching his daughter play. "I've set up a trust in your name. A townhouse in Boston, a full salary for life. You brought my daughter back to me. I can never repay that debt."
Sarah looked at the lemonade, then looked up at Dante.
"Elena didn't want Lily raised by a mob boss, Dante," Sarah said quietly. "She wanted her to have a normal, safe life."
"I know," Dante replied, his tone sincere and humble. "That's why the syndicate is gone. I've restructured everything. I am no longer a mafia boss, Sarah. I'm just a father trying to fix the damage I caused."
Sarah searched his face, seeing no trace of the terrifying tyrant the city once feared. She saw only a man holding on to his second chance with both hands.
"She missed her mother," Sarah whispered. "Every night before bed, Lily asks if her angel mommy can see her."

Dante reached into his pocket and pulled out a small leather-bound photo album. He opened it to reveal pictures of Elena—smiling, beautiful, vibrant.
"Then tonight," Dante said, his voice thick with emotion, "we tell her all about her mother together."
