Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

Dante stood motionless in his study, the world turning to ash around him.

Four years ago, his waterfront cottage in Montauk had been engulfed in a sudden, catastrophic explosion. Authorities had reported finding charred remains, and his loyal underboss, Valerio Vance, had presented him with forensic reports confirming that Elena and their unborn child had perished.

Dante had spent four years drowning in guilt, believing his enemies had targeted his weakness.

He had waged a bloody war against rival syndicates, slaughtering anyone even remotely suspected of involvement.

And all this time... his daughter was alive, raised in secret by Elena's sister, eating scraps and wearing oversized dresses while living in fear of his name.

Dante looked at the little girl resting her head against Sarah’s shoulder. Lily’s gray-blue eyes watched him with quiet curiosity, completely unaware of the storm raging around her.

He walked around the desk, stopping two paces away from them.

He dropped to one knee.

For the first time in his life, Dante Moretti lowered himself before another human being.

"Lily," he said softly, his voice trembling slightly.

The little girl looked at him, her small thumb slipping into her mouth.

"Do you know who I am?" he asked gently.

Lily shook her head, her brown curls bouncing. "Mommy says you're the boss man."

Dante felt a lump form in his throat. He reached out a hand, hovering inches away from her cheek, afraid that if he touched her, she would vanish like a dream.

"I am your father," Dante whispered.

Lily looked at Sarah, then back at Dante. "Does that mean you won't be sad anymore?"

May you like

Tears, hot and unbidden, welled up in Dante's eyes. He bowed his head, resting his forehead against the cool edge of the velvet chair, his powerful frame shaking with silent, wracking sobs.

Sarah watched him, her hand softening as she realized the monster standing before her was merely a broken man grieving a life he thought he had lost forever.
