Chapter 9 - Judgment Day

The federal courtroom in downtown Chicago was packed to capacity. Flashbulbs popped outside the courthouse steps, and reporters crowded the corridors, eager to catch a glimpse of the final downfall of Michael Carter.

Inside, Michael sat at the defense table. The polished confidence and smug grins he had worn at the funeral months ago were entirely gone. His hair was unkempt, his tailored suit replaced by an orange jumpsuit, and his eyes darted nervously around the room.

When Aria walked into the gallery, leaning slightly on Dante's arm, the courtroom fell into an absolute, breathless silence.

She looked radiant. Wearing a sharp, tailored black blazer and holding her head high, she radiated an aura of unshakeable power and grace. She was no longer the terrified pregnant woman hiding on a snowy mountain ledge; she was Aria Sterling, chairperson of Sterling Global.

Michael froze as he saw her walk past the gallery. His face turned pale as ash, and he instinctively shrank back into his seat, unable to meet her piercing gaze.

Judge Harrison, a stern-faced veteran of the federal bench, adjusted his glasses and looked down from the elevated podium.

"This court has reviewed all evidence, financial audits, encrypted communications, and corroborated testimonies regarding the conspiracy, embezzlement, and attempted murder charges brought against Michael Carter," Judge Harrison announced, his deep voice echoing through the silent courtroom.

He paused, letting the heavy weight of justice settle over the room.

"On the count of corporate embezzlement and fraud, the defendant is sentenced to twenty years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. On the primary count of attempted first-degree murder in connection with the events at Rocky Mountain National Park, the defendant is sentenced to life imprisonment."

Bang.

The gavel struck wood with a sharp, final crack that sealed Michael's fate.

A collective gasp rippled through the gallery. Michael slumped forward, burying his face in his cuffed hands as federal marshals stepped up behind him, grabbing him by the shoulders and hauling him out of the courtroom. He didn't look back.

As the doors closed behind the disgraced CEO, a quiet wave of relief washed over the gallery.

Aria let out a long, slow breath, feeling the last invisible chains of her past shatter completely. She turned her head and looked up at Dante.

Dante looked down at her, a profound sense of pride and unwavering devotion shining in his eyes. He extended his hand, and Aria slipped her fingers seamlessly into his.
