Chapter 5 - The Collapse of an Empire

Chaos erupted on the lawn of Saint Jude Memorial Cemetery within seconds.
Reporters swarmed forward like a pack of wolves, microphones thrust aggressively toward the stage, camera shutters firing in a blinding strobe-light frenzy.
"Mr. Carter! Did you push your wife off a cliff?" "Is it true about the insurance fraud?" "What is your connection to the fifty million dollar embezzlement?"
Michael stood paralyzed, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. His grand scheme, carefully constructed over a decade of deceit and sealed with cold-blooded murder, had completely unraveled in less than sixty seconds. He looked around wildly for an escape, but the perimeter was already blocked by four towering men in dark suits—Dante’s private security detail, who had cut off every exit route.
Ashley was already pushing her way through the panicked crowd, desperate to flee, but two security operatives smoothly intercepted her, blocking her path without laying a violent hand on her, yet leaving her utterly trapped.
Maeve stood her ground, her hand resting firmly on her stomach. She felt no fear, only a cold, burning satisfaction as she watched the man who had tried to bury her alive squirm under the inescapable glare of the spotlight.
Dante stepped up beside her, sliding a protective, reassuring arm around her shoulders. His presence alone was enough to keep the aggressive press corps at a respectful distance.
"You're a monster!" Michael finally screamed, finding his voice out of sheer panic as he lunged forward toward the edge of the stage, pointing a shaking finger at Maeve. "She's lying! She staged this! She's trying to ruin me!"
"Save your breath for the federal prosecutors, Michael," a cold, calm voice interrupted from behind the press barrier.
Two unmarked black SUVs pushed through the cemetery gates, their sirens silent but their flashing lights casting eerie red and blue reflections across the gravestones. Federal marshals and local detectives stepped out, moving with practiced efficiency straight toward the stage.
Detective Miller, a seasoned homicide investigator, walked straight up to Michael, holding out a pair of gleaming steel handcuffs.
"Michael Carter, you are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, and the embezzlement of Sterling Global assets," Detective Miller declared, his voice carrying clearly across the silent courtyard.
Before Michael could protest, the heavy steel cuffs snapped shut around his wrists with a definitive, metallic click. As the officers turned him around and began escorting him away in front of the flashing cameras, Michael shot one last, venomous glare over his shoulder at Maeve.

"You won't get away with this!" Michael screamed as they shoved him into the back of the cruiser. "You're nothing without me!"
"No, Michael," Maeve whispered softly to herself as the police cruiser door slammed shut, sealing his fate. "I'm finally myself."
