Chapter 8 - Whispers of the Past

The transition from the sterile environment of the hospital back to the sprawling Sterling estate felt like stepping into another lifetime. The massive iron gates opened automatically as Dante’s car approached, revealing a grand neoclassical mansion surrounded by manicured gardens and towering oak trees.

Aria stood on the front steps, holding baby Leo close to her chest. Dante stood beside her, his hand resting lightly on the small of her back.

"Welcome home, Aria," Dante said softly, his voice carrying a warmth that only she ever got to hear.

For weeks, federal prosecutors had been building an airtight case against Michael Carter and his co-conspirators. The fifty million dollars he had so desperately tried to claim was permanently frozen, diverted back into the newly restored Sterling Global accounts. Ashley, realizing she had been abandoned to take the brunt of the criminal conspiracy, had turned state's evidence, handing over encrypted hard drives containing records of every fraudulent transaction Michael had orchestrated since her father's death.

Inside the grand foyer, the staff—loyal retainers who had served the Sterling family decades ago and had been quietly protected by Dante's network during the dark years—lined up to greet her.

"We missed you, Miss Aria," an elderly butler named Thomas said, his voice trembling slightly with emotion as he bowed his head. "It is as if the light has finally returned to this house."

Aria smiled, though tears pricked the corners of her eyes. For ten years, she had lived a fragmented life under a false name, believing she was entirely alone in the world. Now, standing among people who remembered her roots, holding a healthy baby boy, and leaning on a man who had literally scoured the earth to bring her back, she realized the nightmare was truly over.

Later that evening, as Leo finally fell asleep in his newly prepared nursery, Aria walked out onto the second-floor balcony. The cool night air carried the scent of blooming jasmine.

Dante joined her, handing her a warm cup of herbal tea.

"The trial is scheduled for next month," Dante said, leaning against the stone railing. "Michael's defense team is trying to plead temporary insanity, claiming financial pressure. The judge isn't buying it."

Aria took a sip of the tea, watching the distant city lights twinkle against the dark horizon. "Let him try whatever he wants. He can't rewrite what he did. But Dante... looking back at everything, I keep wondering how you managed to keep track of me all those years without me ever realizing it."

Dante turned his head, his slate-gray eyes meeting hers in the moonlight. A faint, self-deprecating smile touched his lips.

"When you love someone enough to tear down an empire for them, Aria, you learn how to be a ghost," Dante murmured. "I watched over you from a distance through every college lecture, every art exhibition, every quiet afternoon. I made sure no shadow ever came close to you—until Michael slipped through my perimeter with his polished corporate lies. I will never forgive myself for that."

Aria reached out, her fingers gently touching the scarred skin along his jawline. Dante froze, his breath catching as her palm rested against his cheek.

"You didn't fail, Dante," Aria whispered fiercely. "You found me when I was falling off the edge of the world. You brought me back."
